for short teips, same line, it's great! just remember default is one-way. if you want to travel from small station to another part of the country, you need to create your own plan or it tells you nothing is pissible. example Durand, MI to Denver, CO. you have to know to book multi train Durand to Chicago to Denver. the app say no trains available 😞 i enjoy traveling by train. i just have to work out the schedule myself. notifications and ticketing are very reliable.
App is great when it works. It won't let me sign in. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted my phone. Tried it on another phone, same issue. Either pressing the login button does absolutely nothing or I get an error that says they are have problems logging me in. I'm trying to book a trip and give you money and the app just won't work. Frustrating and hard to understand. Glad I'm not on a trip and needing to use the app! Just tried it on an iPad and it works just fine. Nice.
It's gotten better over time but it's still kind of clunky. For example, why can't it tell you if your train is late when you have your reservation pulled up? Nope, you got to find your reservation number, cut and paste it into the app, or enter what station you're departing from etc etc. it's a whole chore instead of being easy.
It would be nice if the app worked more reliably, as it currently feels about 45% unreliable due to frequent random issues. For example, when booking a ticket, I can reach the final step only for it to display “Try again,” especially with round-trip tickets. It would be amazing if I could book my tickets successfully on the first attempt instead of wasting time and causing the user to be frustrated.
Trash app. It wants me to log out to log in and even then is getting my profile info wrong. It only lets you pick 1 favorite departing and arriving destination each (instead of just saving your favorites and letting you choose where you use them). The points redemption instructions don't appear to apply to the app. Finally, of the company in general, God help you if you need to call customer service.
It's a good app overall. One of the annoying aspects of the app is that, even when I am logged in and have an active or upcoming trip, it will claim that I have no such trips. I have to enter the reservation number (which is not easy to memorize) and my last name and it will then bring up the upcoming trip and a QR code for a ticket agent to scan. Then the app will quickly forget about my trip and I have to re-enter the reservation information all over again. Super troublesome when boarding.
this app has problems I had to redo booking several times before it succeeded. on a couple occasions, it reverted to home page after a few seconds when I needed to check another app. it lost my gift card. train which was available for return trip as a round trip purchase was not available to add as one way so I had to cancel the original outbound and rebook the whole thing. multiple fails validating payment
love the Acela product on the NEC, but the app needs work It signs you out after 30 days max, which defeats the purpose of an app. no biometric login.. searches expire in a matter of minutes and your search criteria is not redisplayed on the search screen. to be fair, the website does these things also, but the entire point of an app is convenience and depending on the phone's authentication system for simplicity.
When it works well, it's very helpful, but it is often unreliable. Last week I was taking the train and from the time I was in the waiting area to when I got on to the train, I was logged out of the app. When I was able to log back in, none of my trips appeared anymore. They still have not reappeared on the app. I tried to update my address today but nothing happened when I pressed save. I wish the app was more reliable.
Generally easy to navigate and use but occasionally system cuts out mid-transaction...once I got double-charged for a trip because I didn't get a confirmation and only later discovered the credit card charge thru my bank. I take the train a lot, and this only happened once, but my advice in such a case is to call the Customer Service number before rebooking a trip that you think didn't go through to completion online.
It does what it needs to do. The only feature missing is the ability to create a simple printout of your itinerary to send to someone else. I frequently (always?) want to let the person I am meeting know my train number and planned arrival time so it would be handy to have it generate a text message with that. Weird how Guest Rewards sends you out of the app into the website and then tells you you should download the app. I was just there and they sent me here! lol
Great graphics and design. A little hard to figure out how to purchase with all the add-ons and insurance offers. On line customer service is terrible, chatbot at the end sends you to an agent for up to a 30-minute wait. Definitely use online app. Flex ticket is definitely worth the extra few dollars. If you cancel a trip you get a full refund not just a credit.
I cannot even sign in. Pressing either the sign in or join links just do nothing. Every other part of the app functions, but without being able to log in I cannot use the app for what I need to do, which is begin and complete an upcoming trip. Troubleshooted in every way, such as for network issues and storage issues, including reinstall. Nothing helps.
As a rewards member, I should not have to see offers to apply to become a member! Upon entering my membership information, my upcoming trip was not listed and I had to enter my Reservation number. Very bad and cumbersome. If I just open the app without signing in, it has my upcoming trip and I am sent super timely (excellent) reminders, alarms and offers to upgrade.
App has an issue where it will time out in the middle of a search after 1 minute (multiple times while I am attempting to book). Updated times don't always match the train schedule if it gets delayed, and I have had trips where there were large disparities comparing Amtrak app to Railrat. Scanning tickets and seeing upcoming bookings works decently, although using rewards points for trips could be easier.
I haven't had any major issues with the app. I always like how I am able to easily change my ticket and either pay the difference or get a refund on the app. The notifications I get when the train is arriving or what track it'll be on is also very useful. I just wish I got that info for trains arriving to the station not just departing. Update: 10/14/25 - I had my first frustration when the app crashed when I needed to change my tix but I was able to exchange for physical tickets in person
Pretty much useless - I log in, select my city and destination and keep having to click through errors. On the rare occasion you get to the end, it won't process payment because I've been logged out at some point and it wants me to restart. I travel frequently, and when I'm running through a station to catch a train, but then have to stop and use a kiosk, it makes this app useless and infuriating. Update: On my own I decided to uninstall the app and reinstall. It appears to be working now.
Does most of what you'd expect, but not well and with frequent bugs. The app just doesn't let me sign in to my guest rewards account. Tapping the "Account" tab or the "Sign In" button just makes it load for a second, then it goes back to the main page with no change. Similar bugs are pretty common, such that I often have to just give up on the app and go to the website. In general, though, it does allow you to buy tickets and find info for trips, with some fanangling.
I like the app, it works well to avoid having to call Amtrak. They recently changed some of the options, but it still allows for the flex I need when booking, changing or canceling. My one issue is that when you're in the middle of booking, they allow for the fair to change and you have to cancel the whole thing and rebook. It would be much better if they showed which leg of the trip changed and give me the option to agree to the new fair or pick another option so you can complete the booking.
Not the most intuitive app for travel. They could do better. Not easy to modify trip, want to change departure station, couldn't do that easily. Wanted to cancel and book new ticket, couldn't figure that out. Amtrak should look at how Delta airlines does things. Points that never expire, same day changes, no change fees are great highlights on how to attract and keep customers. Train travel should be relaxing and flexible because it is slower than airlines but nearly the same cost.
