Unable to share news articles after the latest update. Seriously?!? All the news apps I have on my phone have a share feature, but AP does not. Disappointing 😞 1-star UPDATE: After all the issues with the app, I continued to use it to get a different perspective on current events. But now the app is unusable unless you ACCEPT data collection by the app. There is no option to DENY data collection 🤬 I'll give AP a week to fix the option to DENY data collection. Many other news apps available.
AP used to function just fine on my Samsung Galaxy Z6 Flip. Now, when I open the app, the homepage works fine, but if I click on an article to read, the app freezes and will not scroll up or down. After a few seconds of trying to scroll, it will simply crash. I've checked for updates, uninstalled and reinstalled, cleared cache and data, and always get the same results. I guess I'm on the hunt for another reliable news source with a functional app.
Regarding just the app: it NEEDS custom notification settings. If I'm being inundated with notifications and can't choose what I want to see, I'm disinclined to read any of it. I want to choose what I care about the most. Instead, I had to turn off ALL notifications. News is important, but only when you can actually read it.
The news and functionality are good. But the ads are too frequent, appearing on every article on top of the pages. The "x" function reduces the size of the ad but they still obscure some of the reading area. UPDATE: I am uninstalling this app and just bookmarking the website. I still get push notifications although I turned off all push notifications. it's quite frustrating. I like APNews but the app is not good, in my opinion.
Since the last update, something has broken in the app. When you're down in Entertainment or 5 articles down from the very top of the app, and you read that article, when you go back, you go back to the very top of the list of articles rather than staying where you were, which used to happen before. Please fix this. It's hugely annoying. And tell your QA team to add a regression test to ensure this doesn't break on future updates.
[Update: (One hour later). I received a reply from the developers telling me the glitch has been fixed, and it has. I've reinstalled the App.] I've been using this App for several years without issue. As of this morning, October 1, 2025, when I open the App, a notification appears telling me to update. When I follow the link to the Play Store, no option to update is available. The App will not open. Clearly, something has gone awry. Tried uninstalling and re-installing to no avail.
This is my preferred news ap. However, since the upgrade in July it has been absolutely horrendous. The ap crashes, it randomly scrolls, it takes you back to articles you read before in the middle of reading another one, the share button is completely gone, and the formatting makes the headlines hard to read. It's to the point now that I'm just going to find a different platform. And before this I would have given it 5 stars.
I love AP news and the app used to be great and user friendly. However, since the last update about 2 weeks ago, the app crashes, never opens the correct story when I click on one in my notifications, and I have to search all over the place for articles, even big news events. Half of the time the feed doesn't update when I open it and I am seeing the feed for a few days prior. It is unpredictable and there needs to be an update to fix all of these pain points.
Having an issue with notifications on Android (Google pixel). I get a notification and instead of it just being in the pull down menu like it always has been, it's also displaying the headline over whatever other app I'm currently using. This isn't an app that has "display over other apps" permission so I can't shut that off to make it go away. Intrusive and annoying, I'm going to uninstall if it isn't fixed or given an option to disable.
Moving within the app is fine. But the notifications do not work well, and it's very frustrating. Clicking on a notification doesn't take me to that article unless I have fully closed the app beforehand. Otherwise, it just takes me to the last article I opened. I also keep getting repeat notifications, which clutters my notification bar. This wasn't always the case so it must have been some update that ruined it.
AP News is my favorite news source, but this app needs to give better control over notifications. I do not want notifications about sports, but there's no way to turn that off individually. Notifications are either on or off, and there are about two dozen topics that are "default" and you can't delete. I'm going to have to turn off notifications entirely, which defeats the purpose of the app in the first place... so that probably means I'll end up just deleting the app entirely.
EDIT: As of July 19 the app is still down and does not work. Under normal circumstances I love the AP app. HOWEVER, my app has been unusable for over a month. I open it and it just says "sorry there was an error. Please retry" and it's an infinite loop. I have un-installed multiple times and nothing is working. I understand updates can break things but come on, it's been a LONG time. Once the app is fixed I'll update this to a rating that's more accurate To what it deserves.
Good news, bad app. There's the autoplaying videos, though I get no sound at least. But there's no way to control what notifications you get (such as only politics, or sports), only a simple on/off toggle. When I turned it on, I get spammed with dozens of irrelevant notifications per day, drowning out all other notifications on my phone. And worst, when I toggled it back off, I continued to get them anyway. Maybe a bug, but I'm forced to uninstall just to turn off the firehose.
Current version is essentially useless, I miss the prior functional version. As others seem to be experiencing, there are major issues with articles loading. I can load one article and that is it. If I wish to read another I must close the app, making sure it is not running in the background, and relaunch to read another article. Every time. I have tried clearing the cache, all data, and even uninstalled and reinstalled with no success. As a result I am exploring other news agencies.
The news content on the app is great. Associated press, in my opinion, has done a great job of relaying information without bias while minimizing alarm about the topics. There are some technical issues with the app, most of which are easy to work around, but the charts and graphs are currently broken in a way that makes them unusable. Charts will appear with only their headings, graphs are improperly zoomed, and there is no way of enlarging either to actually see them
AP News app had been my go-to news source for a while now. I'd share articles from it and followed the app closely with breaking news updates. However, the pop-up ads now cover at least half the viewing page, and the "1 minute news" auto-plays, and there is no way to change the settings. I'm about to delete the app and will get the news elsewhere, as I don't want the ads and I can't turn off autoplay. This app had been so awesome and reliable - such a shame.
It was a 5, now it's more of a 2+ The update changed the format, making the headlines larger resulting in having to scroll a really long time to find what I want to read. Often the link doesn't fully load and the video/ pictures are not available. Frustrating..... Also getting duplicate "Breaking News" notifications, sometimes the next day. Is it really Breaking News if it's the same info 24 hours later? Not sure why you had to change a really good thing to something that's irritating to use.
Clicking on news story notifications doesn't take you straight to the story you want to read, it just opens the app which is left at whatever article you were last reading, so you have to back out of the article to the main page, scroll up and down to find the article (which usually has a different title from what the notification said) and often have to refresh the main page. Due to this, about 50% of the time an article notification catches my eye I don't end up reading the article because I don't feel like hunting for it.
Terrible. I click on the "read more" link in my news alert email and it either disappears entirely or returns to the "read more" button and no amount of clicking on the button gets you to the "more". The whole point of a news alert and "read more" is obviously to access the news info you are alerting to, which currently is impossible. This does no happen with any other news alerts from CNN or any other organization on my phone. What's the problem?
Alright, I've had enough of this app auto-playing videos constantly and unnecessarily eating up my data. The moment you open the app or back out of an article, video starts playing. Even if you pause it and scroll down through the articles, it will start again if you scroll back up. This is easily the worst change the AP has made to its app and even with all the complaints, they refuse to get rid of it. So I'm done and moving on. I'm not happy to have to, but there are better options out there.
