Missing a very basic component (gradebook). Stops showing uploaded file after a few students (shows just file name). Have to open comment bank each time to get it to offer suggestions based on what I'm typing, and it seldom finds the right one now (was better than the website before). Email address provided to another reviewer bounced back.
Good grief: Speed Grader - the most important aspect of the app, arguably - has become most unbearable to use with the recent update. I spend way too long just trying to swipe to the correct number grade per student. With all the recent negative reviews for many reasons, you'd think something could have been done by now. Also, can we please have an option to prevent students from attaching assignments in the submission comments (it has become an undermining tactic)... Please! It's 2025!
Update 2025: What the hell is up with this update? It's still going extra slow like it has been the last few months. and now its not loading the files students submitted half the time. I can't grade on the app the way I used to. Old review: It can be convenient, but lots of bugs with the grading. Also, it should make links clickable when you edit an assignment on the app, I have to jump on my laptop to make the link active. Also, you should be able to add things to a module on the app.
The concept is great. The execution needs to fix numerous bugs. 1. When there is a complete/incomplete grade to be assigned, the app only records it as an incomplete, no matter which grade you marked to assign. 2. The comments that are made in the rubric dissappear if there is a subsequent submission of the assignment. Also the grade in the rubric also disappears on the resubmission. Also the overall grade disappears from the previous submission.
The recent update is a huge downgrade. Grading using a rubric used to be easy because the categories were all right next to each other. Now they are spread farther apart, in little unnecessary boxes, with a text field separating each one. I used to be able to fit all the fields of the rubric on the screen while the submission was still visible. There's no point for me to use the app anymore.
ZwUpdate 11/8/2025 Please! Do not change a score while I am TYPING IT IN!! I had to go back through each score and fix some of them. Some students would have received 85 out of 10 possible points, instead of 8.5/10. Also, using the cursor to type in the score is preferred (probably by most), so keep the cursor selected when I swipe to the next student. This not a "speedgrader" if I have to fix mistakes.
The update is bad for several reasons. the UI is visually horrible. Grading the students is no longer in alphabetical order by last name. I think its be the time they submitted. Sometimes I like to watch the video files on my phone and grade on my computer. As the browser version won't automatically play .mp4 files like the mobile app version does. and it crashes. This looks like they had AI design the update to save money amd didn't test the rollout. Very disappointed.
Don't expect it to match up with the browser version. You can enter grades, but you have to go through a lot of submenus just to find it. Not ideal. Edit: still really clunky, but now with the added bonus of frequently crashing while I'm trying to read assignments my students turned in through Canvas. Get it together, please.
Further lowering my rating of this app. It already has limited functionality compared to the student version; today I discovered that when writing an announcement, you can't reposition the cursor. As a result if you want to correct a typo you have to erase everything you've written after the typo to fix it. This makes the announcement functionality effectively unusable.
Works great for grading on the go... Until it freezes my phone. Certain assignments will cause the app to completely freeze up, and I have to force close it to regain access to my phone. Some of the assignments are online text submissions, and they all open fine on desktop, so I can't figure out what is giving the Android app such trouble.
For the most part it makes it convenient with checking in on students, grading, etc... a couple of annoyance: PLEASE adjust the settings so we can copy text. Especially on canvas emails!!! I hate that I have to get on my desktop just to copy text in canvas. Also, it would be nice to just have the overall BASIC settings the desktop does, for example, just simply unlocking a module. The developers need to have a roundtable with teachers to discuss where Canvas falls short, mostly with the app!!
I love the idea of this app, but the speed grader will only work on my phone which is too small of a screen to use for grading. Every time I use the app on my iPad, I receive a "whoops" message when opening essays and can't grade them. I've tried logging out, uninstalling and reinstalling the app on my iPad, but nothing seems to work and it's incredibly frustrating!
Latest update is glitch w messages. I have to reload multiple times, the notification pops up multiple times despite clearing it. Never realized how well it ran until now. I depend on messages heavily, and I miss at least 2 per day, and sometimes messages that are a direct response to one I just sent. Not okay. Fix this, canvas! Push an update!
Canvas is great on the computer, but this app is garbage. What genius decided to make a teacher's app with no access to a gradebook? The ONE thing a teacher is expected to produce, and you can't see it, let alone interact with it. Probably didn't focus group that one before rolling out the app, but there's no excuse at this point. Grading assignments also lacks functionalities available on your computer.
Fantastic app! I've just started using Canvas a few semesters ago and so far it's been amazing. I no longer need to carry my laptop around from campus to campus. This app allows you to do almost everything you would do on a laptop or desktop. Best part is the notifications, in real-time you are able to respond to students' questions and see submissions of assignments, adjust due dates and more... instantly and right from your phone. Interface is smooth and easy to use even for a first timer.
The app can be clunky at times to use, making you open a browser and login to the site to use certain functionality. However it is helpful for some simple uses. But recently, I've been receiving double and now TRIPLE push notifications when students submit an assignment. I've gone so far as to turn off all push notifications, but this has not helped.
I would give this a zero if I could. Half of my materials I cannot even access through this app, including the entirety of the Modules, which is basically where everything is. I cannot access the calendar to plan my week without going online and I can't look at students' quizzes. All this app is good for is to read and respond to messages and to see how many assignments were turned in.
While this app is convenient it significantly lacks functionality. I don't get why you can't see "grades* in the app but you can on the website. Same goes for modules. The app should essentially be a copy of the website version, but it's not. I can't enter "excused" or remove late points in the app which essentially makes grading in the app obsolete. Also lacks the delay until announcement function for announcement posts or allowing students to like and not just comment. Please update the app!
Love using this app for keeping tabs on my classes. The only major issue is that the notifications don't display more than one line, even when expanded. Two solutions: 1) make them full expand the way they do in news, messaging, and so many other apps. 2) have a dashboard in the app that keeps a list of them. I can only see a name, class and then the first word or two "has posted" for example.
