The idea of this app is great for the heatpump water heater I bought last summer. The schedule side of it is flakey at best though. Originally I could set the night mode to off, now it only has vacation/away as an "off" option, which would be fine, but it randomly comes on, in random modes, ignoring the scheduled settings completely no matter which of the 4 time options are set to. Has been intermittent like this for a few months now.
App is useless. Water heater will not connect to Wi-Fi even though everything is correct and connecting to dedicated 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Mesh networks definitely don't work despite being both 2.4 and 5 GHz. Every other device I own connects without issues except the Rheem water heater even when I purchased a separate, dedicated access point configured strictly to 2.4 GHz. Connection Failed is the error every time. When this is the only device that is failing then it's the device that's bad.
The app works, but the scheduling function doesn't always take effect correctly. Example: You'd set it to change to 110 degrees and heat pump only at 4pm. Yet, the unit will show 130 degrees and energy saver at 4.05pm. But as soon as you open the app on your phone and go to schedule it magically pushes a trigger to the unit and it goes to 110 degrees and heat pump only.
Horrible pain to connect, the app goes offline too often. Also loses network settings and has to be re-added over and over. The appliance came back online in the app suddenly, third time had happened several times. Good that it's working again, bad that it's intermittent. Nothing was changed or updated on the router, nothing was changed on the firewall, nothing was updated or changed on this app or the mobile device.
App won't allow you to completely shut off water heater. If settings turned to lowest setting on water heater the app is disabled. Not the way I was hoping it would work. Update December 2025. I have 2 water heaters that are supposed to be able to use this app. Not happy at all with the app. For about a year, one of the water heaters wouldn't connect. Now that one connects and it can't find my other one. The app is supposed to be able to connect to multiple devices. They don't.
Doesn't follow the schedule unless I open the app and navigate to the schedule tab. Then the hot water heater immediately changes to what the schedule is set for. Used to work. App works well for my Rheem heat pump hot water heater. I do have a minor annoyance though. It loves to tell me my energy usage and saving but nowhere does it allow me to program in how much my energy usage costs so it can calculate that automatically. It's so obvious that people would want to see that.
The app has nice features. I had to try 3 times to get it connected to WiFi. In fact the final success was due to my exiting the app and going back into it. Secondly, I try to change my schedule and it is not saving. Third, the alert system is not modifiable. For example I would prefer to choose to turn on/off alerts via the app. I'd really like phone alerts instead of physical sound alerts from my water heater. Lastly, I cant change the temperature via my app as well, didn't work.
It was almost impossible to set up the wifi connection. Instead of following the onscreen instructions, I ended up using the 'having difficulty with set up' instructions and it finally worked. Even then the display is slow to respond. I tried turning on the unit with the app, and it buffers way too long. Then it didn't recognize that I hit cooling. Gotta say my Ecobee was much easier to use and had an immediate response. Wish I could use that with the Rheem product (furnace).
The app gives only basic information. It will be helpful to be able to change Mode remotely, as when I might forget to set it to Vacation Mode after leaving for a trip. I can raise or lower its temperature. I have received no alerts yet, so can't say how useful that will be; it seems appropriate. But I go out to the unit often, out of curiosity, to see what the tank temp is, or other data I can find on its screen. That should be on the app.
Like others, I was unable to add my (gen 5 hybrid) water heater, even though the app connects to the eco access point during setup. Had to borrow a friend's iphone to add it, but then it showed up in this app as well. It had a period where nothing updated in the app for a week or so (and I couldn't control anything from the app either), even after restarting the app/phone, clearing the app storage, logging out and in, etc. But then it eventually reconnected, and since then it seems like it's worked consistently. Graphical design is a little odd, with graphs and especially the hot water availability rendered a lot smaller than one would prefer. But that's not a big deal.
I changed routers last month and now cannot connect app and water heater. I've tried enumerable times to get the heater connected to the new network, but nothing works. Irritated beyond words. The app works most of the time, but not always. It is also opaque regarding its install. The app stopped providing power usage info yesterday, but spontaneously began working again this morning (12/3/22). There does seem to be a need for greater quality control at Rheem.
They just updated the app so I guess it's time to update my review. Once again they pushed an update without internal any testing, and totally broke my system. Not only did I have several cold showers, but the app now does not respond to home/away settings, and also loses its schedule randomly. I am currently in a power outage and running on backup power. I put the unit in Away mode. Confirmed it was off. I return, only to find my backup battery at 5% and the system running full bore! Awful.
Functional, but a bit lacking. App could allow for easier changing of temperatures and show when the furnace or ac is actually running! Changing to one star because the app disconnected and won't reconnect! Complete garbage! Finally connected and then the most recent update caused it to disconnect again. Somehow after trying for hours (literally), I ended up getting the right sequence of events & key presses and the thing connected. But I had to NOT follow tech support recommendations!
App is terrible. Getting it to even connect to the thermostat is an exercise in frustration. If it loses connection, well, good luck to ya. A simple fix for the touchscreen thermostat would be to pop up a keyboard so you can type in your wifi info but nooooo, apps all the way. Really regretting buying Rheem and this stupid "integration" that doesn't work.
Awful. I was able to connect the water heater to home wifi and the app to home wifi, but after about 15 minutes of the spinning circle the app disconnects. I attempted probably 15 times over two days. Finally got it to connect and was able to set a schedule, but have not been able to override the schedule through the app or through Amazon Echo. App is worthless. I finally uninstalled it. The app was updated and it worked fine for months, but again stopped working after the latest Android update.
Not sure when some changes were made, but, noticed my water was especially hot lately. I normally keep it at 119 and in eco. It was on 125 and performance when I checked. Also, a "schedule" with times and temps I would not have selected was created AND set to "follow". How can you make a default setting ON like that? Esp one that wastes energy and costs the customer money.
Adequate. I'm using Sensi equipment on my other system, and it provides me with a good deal more information than EcoNet. Particularly trends, and historical information. If those are available in this app, they're buried so deep I can't find them. This system replaced an aging system with a Nest, and it had historical data as well. Perhaps in a later update... I also dislike the fact that I can't install it on my Android tablets. Another advantage for Sensi and Nest.
Horrible. If you are considering purchasing a water heater that uses this app; save yourself a lot of frustration and keep shopping. Not only does the app hardly have any features; the basics functionality that it does have fails to work reliably. Once again, I opened the app to see why I ran out of water so quickly... It told me that it was following the schedule.. and also that the temperature was set 8 degrees lower than it should have been for the time of day. Update: More problems :(
Bought the ProTerra Hybrid hot water heater a month ago. Heater works like a gem. The ECO app is one of the worst apps and needs a very large overhaul. Totally stopped working, and now it is impossible to log on to. Tried removing the app and reinstalling it with no success. Frankly, I don't have time to deal with it any longer after spending 2 hours trying to get it to work. Useless, just plain useless. It needs fixing, not a bandaid...
I bought a tankless water heater 2 weeks ago, and it works great. Unfortunately, the wifi setup is not so easy. I'm not sure if the app or Android OS is the cause of disconnecting your smartphone with the wifi from the tank during setup. After reconnecting to the tank to finish the setup, you are led to select your wifi network, but the app won't recognize the password. I eventually had to set up the wifi connection using an iPhone. This app needs to be updated in order to fix this issue.
