It's a pretty nice app, the interface isn't super simple but it is fairly easy to figure out. Like other reviewers, I had some difficulty logging in as a subscriber, but found that I could be recognized if I first opened an issue and THEN clicked the log in button. Otherwise, my only issue is that the 'scrapbook' feature only let's you save one item at a time, it would be nice to get a list of saved articles, like the one on the website.
I absolutely love being able to listen to articles during my commutes, so the availability of most articles with audio makes this app my go to. The playlist could have a bit of a friendlier UI, but overall I'm super happy with the app itself and the quality and diversity of articles is ofc fantastic.
It is a great read and mostly expert writen articles. It lacks only daily or weekly overview so you can find your footing. There are so many things happening at the same time, analysis correlation is needed.
It's impossible to find articles. Even if you paste the full name of the article in either of the searches it's simply will not find it. Even if you search the author name. So I can't find the articles I paid for. FED UP! To make matters worse (at Aug 15 2024) it STILL doesn't sync articles you have saved/bookmarked EVEN between this app on different devices. Let alone between the web version and the app. As a workaround they should enable web articles to be shared straight to app, like Reddit
I think mostly the articles are so lengthy and there is a lot of repetion of one and the same thing again and again throughput the article. A humble suggestion and submission.
I am giving it 4 stars only because the audio is now usable and the app doesn't crash. But please, make the audio experience more sophisticated, I want to be able to speed up, add a sleep timer, maybe even a reading tracker showing the location within the text. So far, it's just play/pause. It's a good magazine, don't waste the potential
Fix the audio player. If one for some reason needs to stop mid-article in a downloaded issue, there is no option to resume. One has to start over, there's no fast forward even or other way to get to the point where one left off. With long feature articles it's not a fringe use case to have to stop. Plus audio players have conventional functionality so no need to invent anything. Go to any podcast app and copy basic functionality. Please!
The thoughtful long-term, global views expressed here are so much more insightful, helpful, and historically contextual than the moment-by-moment, tweet-by-tweet melodrama of the current political news cycle. Let's all breathe deeply and keep our heads screwed on. Now and going forward. Oh, and the app itself is clean, well designed, easy to use with just the right amount of alerts to current and historical events. A totally worthwhile subscription.
Really needs to have font size control on every page. We don't just set the font size once for our eyesite, we also read in different reading situations. ALSO...the login is stupid. When a new issue comes out it forgets who I am, won't accept my password and when I click the link for help it doesn't give me a password reset option, instead it asks my postal code. Ffs guys get your app updated.
I like the app a lot. Recent issues and audio articles are laid out in a useful and minimal manner. The search engine is a great addition. However, I miss the ability to read special articles or collections that are only available on the website, for example, the summer reading collection for 2023 or the essay by Dorothy Thompson.
App is generally working well and is easy to navigate. However, there is something wrong with how each user's 'Up Next' queue is being synced. Between listening sessions the app almost never remembers which items were completed/cleared from the 'up next'. I will build a queue, listen to half of it, then come back later and the 'up Next' queue will once again contain all of things originally added. Very frustrating and makes me feel like I need to screencap the 'up next' before closing the app.
The app needs to be updated. In fact, for the money I pay for subscription, I expect it to be updated to reflect similar capabilities of other apps. First, it's search function will hang many times, forcing you to restart the app to get it to work. Two, the "share" function doesn't work. A person cannot share via email with anyone and it has an option for Google+ which doesn't even exist anymore. Other apps have the function to share with WhatsApp and Signal. Not this one
Canceled my subscription with foreign affairs magazine through my account. Some months later they accessed my closed credit card and billed me. Thought I finally sorted it out now ive received a bill saying if i dont pay they will suspend my account. Easy to subscribe, near impossible to cancel subscription. Dont use a credit card to subscribe.
I'm disappointed in the changes made to audio. When listening to the audio version of a magazine issue, the app no longer sorts the articles in the order they appear in the magazine. The audio articles are sorted in a seemingly random order that changes each time you play them. This is a very unfortunate change.
I want to like this but the app UI is clunky at best. Navigation is not intuitive and 90% of the time the apps push notification link to articles that the app doesn't contain as it isn't updating for some reason. Really disappointing for a paid subscription. Update: seems to work better now, I've interested to four stars and assess again later
The contents are very good, a nice balance between hysterical non-verified tabloid craze and detail-overloaded The Economist monstrosity. The app is ok, but few details are missing, like the ability to jump the entire page forward or backward, one-press night mode, or sync between devices (at least 'saved' section )
Need the ability to sort search results (by date, relevance, etc.) and share articles from via the share function that are pulled up through search results. Hard to cite these articles in academic research when such functions are not available. These issues were specific to my galaxy Tab, those functions worked fine on my galaxy S9. Otherwise great journalism!
(24 Dec). It's working now. The audio player can be improved, have features like rewind, select portion, and playing speed. (20 Dec 2019) Subscribed for a year of digital version but unable to access Unable to access both on website and the app. Emailed customer service but received no replies. (Dec 2020) audio player still not improved.
Love the content! My only issue is that the audio comes out so late! I'm dyslexic so reading these long essays is difficult and by the time the audio is released the stories are loosing their relevance. I subscribed to FA because I want to have interesting conversations about current events. And currently I'm always a month or two behind the times...
I was very dismayed that I am unable to access the FA website. I was told that this subscription is for the app only and that the 100 years of magazines are only available if I cancel the app subscription and open one on the website. I was given a link to FAQs as FA explaining this. I do not think that this is explained well on the app's overview or on FA's website.
