With a few tweaks this could easily be a 5 star app... The narrations are good, but they aren't great... Just as I get used to a narrator for a chapter someone else comes along and reads the next chapter, and I don't mean in the form of different characters... Pausing sometimes closes the app completely and sometimes you end up starting your chapter all over again... Over all, though, I like this app... There are authors on here that I actually grew up reading, despite their age!
So far it was great. It relies on the volunteer reading from librivox. For the book I read, the volunteers are decent. It has also a timer, to use for sleeping. You can download and use off line, or streaming, which are great options to have. 2019-8: it started having ads everytime you take an action. Not terrible, but I would pay a few dollars to get rid of ads.
Strange navigation within the app. It allows you to pick a category but it won't let you pick your own book. I pick 'philosophy' and it picks a random book For me and just starts reading. So I go back and pick 'philosophy' again to see if there's a way choose for myself and an ad pops up. So I watch / listen to the ad and then it sends me back to pick a category again. So I pick 'philosophy' again and another ad pops up. Wash rinse repeat! weird app, I don't get it, definitely not user friendly.
As a new user I was pleased with the ease of use after I figured out the basics. No problem when returning to where you left off. Each chapter has a different reader. Lots of genres and seems like many older books. Downloading isn't required but not sure about wi-fi? Tried to listen to a downloaded chapter away from home and didn't seem to work. Was day one so likely my issue. Thanks to the readers!
I haven't had the app that long but it mostly seems like older, classic books. I just got through with The Secret Garden. I loved it! The readers are different with each book. You can download the chapters to your sd card but I haven't figured out how to download the whole book. the ads don't bother the reading experience at all. The app works fine on my Galaxy S7.
Although the selection is from old books (in the public domain), it still provided some quality entertainment. There are a lot of hidden gems in the selection and most are read well. On occasion you find a not as pleasing reader but there seems to be more than one recording on some books, so you might have to switch around to find a reader to suit you. A lot of good classics that I am discovering and enjoying.
The app feature older books and short stories, narrated by librivox volunteers. The quality of the narrators is unpredictable and, in some cases they are impossible to understand. Others are excellent. With digging, there are a lot of enjoyable books, especially classics like Treasure Island, King Solomon's Mines, and The Count of Monte Cristo, and some page-turners you've never heard of. Going back to a search will always bring up an advertisement but at least the books are not interrupted.
Difficult to find your book choice but the book plays well when you begin. Play - pauses your place and restarts easily. Some switching of readers keeps you focused. Some commercials but not intrusive. Adding to my review after over 2 years of use...very enjoyable. New books are added to keep the variety up. Some books I would not normally looked to choose but enjoyed. Others that I lost interest in I do not know how to get rid of on my open book list and they continue to populate.
It took a bit to figure out how to download a book so I could listen to it offline, and like most apps, the documentation isn't helpful, but once I got it working, it was fine. More effort should be put into rating and identifying a book by its reader, as some readers are excellent, while others can ruin the best book through their lack of skill.
The free audiobooks are great but the app itself is not. Bad user interface and frequent crashes, especially when first launching the app after not using it for a period of time. Never opens for me on the first try. It takes 3-4 attempts to get it to stay open every single time. 3 stars because it's free and the selection of audiobooks is decent
Very enjoyable and functions well. Has the selection and types of books you'd expect for free (IE the classics etc.) which is more than enough to entertain me for a very long time. Not sure how often/if they add to their selection or plan to do so in the future, i am a history buff and enjoy the classics, and also the philosophy genre, but would like them to add a science genre or more educational books on different subjects perhaps.
Decent app. Main issue that it sometimes opens itself and starts playing. Last night it got through 6 and a half chapters in one book. Audio quality varies; my first book had an amazing reader, but my second had a bunch of different readers with varying audio quality. In one chapter of the second book, the recording switched to a different reader in the middle of the chapter which was quite confusing.
...ok, I'm not going to bother with any of these free readers as they all seem to do the same thing. In less than 10 seconds I had 2 popup ads for Audible. Give us like, I don't, 5 minutes to explore the app? Wait until we've opened our first book? How about that, an ad to open the book. Seems reasonable to me. At this point, it's not worth trying to get that far.
Admittedly, I don't use this app that much, because I normally listen to audiobooks on my desktop. When I do use it, it works well. Some narrators are much better than others, but it is Free, so that's not a big deal. The only reason I don't give it Five Stars is because of the very limited selection of the free books compared to ones available through purchase.
So far, this one has delivered what it is supposed to. Albeit, the ads are there, and of course, the availability of books is limited to the public domain books WHICH are available as audio books! Otherwise, so far (not to ginx it as they all have this strong tendency to go bad!), one of the better ones. I'll come back and change this accordingly though.
in a lot of books, the actors would swich every chapter and it kinda sucked. There isnt a very good book selection, only three of all of the books Ive looked up were actually there. Lastly, it never resumes where I left off even if I bookmark so I always lose my place. Despite this, it did help me in some aspects, I just think theres room for improvement is all.
On the one hand this has been a great service. The recordings are hit or miss (mostly hit, tho some are unlistenable) but I'm grateful to all the volunteers. However, the advertising is EXTREMELY invasive - even when the app is not being used it will lock the device and play ads. It looses its place and does not remember settings.
Every time I clicked on anything it gave me a full page ad for audible. I already have audible. I tried to set up my account but when I put in my American Express card it said no good account. So then I put in Visa and it said decline for over the limit. This card has absolutely $0 on it. Now I'm wondering if I need to call and cancel those credit cards and get the numbers changed. Super sketchy.
Garbage app. It cannot remember where you left off, always shows everything you downloaded, even if you delete the download (have to delete data in app settings to remove what you've downloaded previously), won't play after supposedly downloading a book, then shows that it is waiting for a stream after it won't play. Really? LOUSY app, plus ad heavy! Ads pop up after every navigation within the app. Just download directly from Librivox. WAY better! F this app
I just listened to a collection of sy-fi short stories. They were entertaining even if I didn't always understand what the point was. I listened until I fell asleep. They were good to sleep to, so I hope to hear them again tonight. I expected to get an ad between each story, but no, only the app identifier. This was absolutely acceptable. I enjoyed the various readers, found none to be bad. I had been wanting to do books on tape again after mine were stolen some years ago. This is better. Thanks
