No complaints but a request: please add an "are you sure you want to finish this track?" pop up or similar when hitting "finish track" like other similar apps have. I cannot be the only one out there who accidentally hits "finish track" instead of "pause recording" on occasion and it's frustrating as there's no way (that I've seen) to be able to undo that.

Update: The app remains less than adequate (not intuitive, difficult to customize, and just plain confusing). For example, when you press the big red record button, it doesn't record. You must then provide more info about type of adventure. Why? I don't trust it, but find it useful as a backup app. There is plenty NOT to like about Gaia GPS. Thankfully I also have Google maps!!

Edit: the enshittification has progressed to not even let you make routes on the free version. Use Caltopo, Gaia GPS is no longer a good app. Original review: Used to be a 5 star app, but ever since the Outside Inc acquisition it's been gradually getting made worse and worse. As of a week ago, it now can't even snap to trails to make routes. It will look like it's snapping while mapping it, but after saving the snapping is undone and Gaia draws straight lines with no elevation data.

This app was awesome until Outdoor acquired it. I used this app mostly to build and save routes. This was the only feature that was unique and useful to this app but now I am unable to save routes without upgrading to the premium version. I will be deleting this app and finding an alternative unless they add this feature back to the free version.

Very helpful as an accessory to bushwhacking/hiking trailless peaks, if that's your thing; but in addition to the complaints everyone else has mentioned, the app (and online version) are extremely slow and buggy. I loathe subscription-based purchases but I'd consider this one IF it weren't so damn glitchy AND it were a little more comprehensive of a tool. (As it is I use it in conjunction with AllTrails, Garmin, Peakbagger, and sometimes even Google Maps.)

Awesome, must have for people into gps maps who want to do some route finding. Edit: This was a really awesome app, but for reasons that are completely incomprehensible to me, they devs have ruined the best feature. You used to be able to easily and quickly create routes that would snap to the contours of the trail. Now, the feature either works jankily, doesn't work at all, or the path snaps to a line diverging from the trail randomly. I am canceling my premium subscription.

Lately my trail recording has suddenly been awful. Jumpy and inaccurate, and has happened in numerous places, airplane mode on, etc. It had been so good, but something changed recently. Also having issues syncing phone data to the cloud. Just lots of issues lately, unfortunately. Will happily update the review if they're fixed, because it used to be awesome!

Keep increasing the subscription price without fixing bugs. Once the app was purchased by Outside it seems to have gone down hill. My subscription price has doubled over the past couple years with minimal improvement to the app. The layers are great and it's generally easy to use but sometime the bugs can be very difficult to work around. I'd recommend CalTopo as a good alternative.

This was once a great app. I used it almost daily for everything from planning trips, marking campsites, tracking adventures, you name it. The price increase had me questioning my need for the premium subscription. The new updates have me questioning my need for this app at all. It takes forever to load, doesn't work half the time, and asks me to log in constantly. I've canceled my subscription after 5 great years and will be looking at alternatives

This app was always reliable and a bargain for the features. Since "Outside" took it over its been hot garbage. I didn't mind the subscription increase and felt it was well worth the price of admission IF it would've been the same app I'd used for years! Now I can't trust it to track my progress during events that are won or loss based on your ability to submit "tracks" showing you indeed ran the marked course. I'm going to start the search for a new TRUSTWORTHY app.

I have 3 apps that will track my hikes. I monitor distance, altitude, moving time. Gaia is the worst app of the 3. It used to work fine. But t's become unreliable. It takes up to 2 minutes for it to acquire the GPS signal. And it can lose the signal frequently and not get it back for up to 30 minutes. So a distance reading is totally wrong. The problem isn't the GPS signal. I've used all three apps at the same time, and the others never have issues. Same issue happens on two different phones.

Every time there's an update to the app, something gets messed up. Now it's the sync function. My Android device won't sync. I just keep getting a message saying "waiting for Gaia cloud". And that's funny, because the update notes say that the most recent update was to make syncing better. Ever since Outside bought Gaia, there have been a lot of glitches.

Let me down in the middle of nowhere. I will be cancelling the subscription I have had for many years. Sad cause this used to be a great app. We were snowmobiling and I was using offline maps. At one point I looked down and my map was just black. I couldn't get into the layers to try another map. Restarting the app didn't help. Once we got back to service, the map came back. I have used this map many times offline and it was working for a couple hours before it did this.

Bring backup... Unexpectedly logged out in the back country. The developers are aware of this issue and working on it but please don't plan to use this app without having a backup in place (paper maps & compass and the skills to use them or another app) as I was logged out on the way out of the back country when I got a momentary connection to the phone network. If I was heading into the mountains instead of out it would have been a big deal. In my case it was just an inconvenience.

I've used GAIA for years for recording and following tracks and I'm a legacy subscriber. Every time I've used it recently it logs me out in the middle of recoding a track when I don't have cell service. I can't log back in until I'm back in range. That's doesn't help me at all. If I can't make sure I'm on route I could get very lost. I can't use this anymore. Very disappointed, especially since it's been months like this and I see several reviews of the same.

The app itself seems pretty good. I've been using it for a few years now, and the maps have been useful and pretty accurate. I've used it from Backcountry skiing, Mtb, hiking, and overlannding. I just haven't used it enough in the last year to justify keeping it. Especially with a $30(?) price hike, bringing it to $71.90 for the year. I've also never used the Outside+ subscription that comes with it. Maybe have different subscription levels? With the Outside+ and without?

When I first downloaded GAIA a few years ago it seemed to perform well and I was quite happy with it - so much so that I renewed my contract for 5 years (not cheap). However, they have made changes to the app that seem to cause more crashes and freeze-ups, and saved maps definitely load slower. Most frustrating of all is that I can no longer create area maps on my laptop; I can only do this function on my tiny phone screen. What idiot thought that change was a good idea? I'm about ready to delete the app and try a competitor's product. GAIA used to be good, now it's just frustrating!

I used to love this app. Since Outside bought it, they've destroyed the functionality by requiring a login to use the it. You cannot trust the app to be available when you need it, because it may throw a login request at you when you're in the backcountry w/ no signal. I've complained to tech support about this problem and been told it's "industry standard" to require a login. It's a map folks, not a social network, and it worked great for years without logins. I will not renew my subscription.

I used to be a paid member. They make it purposely difficult to export multiple items at once. Their "solution" is to put the items into a folder and export the folder, which would be fine, except you have to open each item individually in order to move it. This is actually more steps than exporting one by one. I think it's an attempt to keep you within their walled garden and I don't appreciate that approach. I would rate it five stars otherwise.

Edit: I didnt have a browser on my phone so that's why the login flow didn't work lol. Leaving the review below for purposes of public shame. Worked for a while, now I get a notification that I need to migrate my account via a prompt to log-in. Now I can't press log-in as it says "login canceled programmatically". Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and the login just flashes. This is frustrating as I paid for this service and it doesn't even work? Thanks for the rip off!!
