I use this app constantly. One of the things that I cannot stand is the fact that there seems to be no way to shut off the screen prompt for quick phrases without disabling the quick phrase. I love using "stop" and "snooze" for alarms and timers, I often use "answer" and "decline" for incoming phone calls. I don't love that the prompt completely covers up the caller's name. It should be possible to disable the onscreen prompt. Also, the email listed in the app store is disabled.
I really liked Assistant and have used it for so many years. It was so useful and really came in clutch when I needed anything quickly and reliably. I know Google wants us to use Gemini, so they're stripping Assistant of its core functions. I bet that gets a lot of people to switch out of frustration. But Assistant was exactly what I needed. I don't want to change, and I won't be forced to use Gemini.
Voice recognition is very inconsistent. It's either too sensitive and opens no matter what you say or do, or you're shouting at it with no response. I've retrained it twice and had wildly different results (see above). Would prefer if I could control the sensitivity somehow. Also, it records everything I say to it, but Assistant still gets my notes and reminders wrong. It never opens my morning routine no matter how many times I attempt to trigger it. In short, not great for hands free.
Used to be able to easily and reliably wake my s7 with my voice, locked or not. Phone used to know when I was driving, and would announce calls and texts automatically. Been about 4 months now. None of that works anymore, no matter how I setup permissions, train and retrain, etc. It's actually gotten dangerous having to fiddle around with this instead of just talking to it while driving. So I don't rely on it anymore. Was very helpful and safe while it lasted.
Most of the time, this is great. But the worst thing the creators could have done was remove voice unlock. If I'm using Google Assistant, usually that means my hands aren't free. I shouldn't have to hear "for that, you'll need to unlock your phone." If I could unlock my phone, I wouldn't be using assistant. I also experience this weird thing where there are two different voices responding to me ever since I switched from the default voice.
It was working perfectly every day... Now, after a recent update, (when it changed from the 3 colored dots to the colored bar), the app crashes everytime I push the button. An app that's completely broken is useless. Update: it's gotten worse, it doesn't even activate now, no matter what I do. Reinstalling didn't help. The article didn't help. The Community forum ignored me. I need Assistant to set medication alarms, and now I can't do that!! Update: Assistant crashes when I try to send feedback
Why are you constantly sabotaging something that was good and so useful Google? I remember back when I discovered that you could do things like set the alarm clock, timer, call people on your contacts list, open up apps, all from one location via the mic icon, I thought that was so cool! Now you click on the mic and you get search results in Google browser. When I say call someone on my contacts list or set an alarm I don't need search results in a browser. Thanks for another surprise downgrade.
The app is getting worse and worse with Android Auto. I try to call someone whom I call all the time through voice command. Now, it doesn't understand who I want to call and offers people whom I never call. Before the latest update, I could say, "Planet Fitness", and it would give me locations of ones nearby. Now it tries to play some band on Spotify. I used to find the assistant extremely helpful while driving. Now it's flat out frustrating.
It seems like an update has disabled. Simple things. For example, being able to snooze my alarm by saying Hey Google, snooze my alarm for 5 minutes. On my phone. It doesn't seem to register that anymore even when I hit the microphone when I hit the microphone to say hey Google set alarm for a certain time. Now I can't seem to do it. I have to go into the clock app. Just really frustrating changes that don't make any sense.
One of the most useful features is now gone? Location based reminders can no longer be made via voice commands? Things like "Hey Google, remind me to buy batteries next time I'm at Costco" no longer work. I used this feature quite often, especially when driving because I can't create a reminder manually without pulling over. It was a great tool when you don't want to forget something you thought of while on the way somewhere. Siri just got way more attractive, as my kid smugly pointed out.
I pretty much stopped using it due to the removal of the "beep" after you say "Hey Google!". Not only has it sent wrong words or partial messages, but also to wrong contacts bc nothing tells you otherwise. Now i have to look while driving. I also use it a lot, and I mean A LOT to find my phone when I set it down or leave it somewhere like in the car and it falls in between the seats and you can't see it, but you can hear it, not anymore. This "fix" is THE WORST! Plz make it an optional setting.
The voice recognition seems to work when it wants to. Might be tied to the security updates for Android. One week I was able to set reminders without unlocking my phone which was great, then it stopped working. The settings in the options don't change so I never know when a feature stops working. Annoying as hell. I might need to make a call, or get some quick directions but I can't unlock while driving, so really sucks when it stops working.
The "ok Google" feature has never worked correctly, so I always use the microphone icon. Now that icon is for voice search. That decision by Google was stupid. I could do a voice search before using the assistant anyway, but now that the microphone icon is exclusively for voice search I cannot perform tasks like setting reminders and alarms. Good job, Google, you've finally gone the way of Apple and figured out how to make your product as unusable as possible.
I don't understand how anyone thought it was a good idea to route the audio prompts through the "Calls Bluetooth" rather than "Audio Bluetooth". I used to use the assistant in the car to check messages handsfree and make phone calls etc, but since it now uses the same channel as the phone, I'm no longer able to make phone calls & the sound quality of the prompts is greatly diminished.
This app frustrates me more than any other app. It doesn't give notifications anymore, and the responses are totally irrelevant. They usually consist of random articles that have nothing to do with what you asked, or it will search your Gmail, which I don't even use. I don't get any info about travel time or nearby locations, even though everything is set up. They just stopped one day. It often cuts me off in the middle of a sentence as well, and when I say hey Google, it looks like it's ready to listen but it just sits there until you hit the microphone button twice. It used to be okay when it was Google now, but assistant is worse than worthless.
There was a time that I appreciated Google and it's products. They were innovative; they worked well; they were free. It seems they decided that we wanted the opposite. Latest example: I'm pretty annoyed I suddenly started getting notifications for EVERY SINGLE NBA game (and multiple per game) out of the blue. I have no interest in the NBA, I never opted in. Worst of all, I have no way of unsubscribing now. I had to disable ALL sports notifications. No way to fine tune notifications.
I would love to give a 5 star but for some reason this app has a difficult time hearing commands, working only when it wants, no rhythm or reason. I'm using a Samsung S7 edge! The time I need it most is while driving but no success. The icon used to float on my home screen and no longer there.....should be easy to use..but as of now, it's not. Hopefully this changes.
I don't know what happened, but this app got way worse instead of better. It doesn't even understand at times what your intentions are. It'll open or ask to do something internally on your phone, when you want a web search, and plenty more downfalls of using this lower center button nightmare. Do yourself a big favor and install CoPilot right on the bottom row, and use it instead.
Where to begin. I stupidly changed to the Gemini version and it's absolutely garbage. To call this an "assistant" is a disgrace to the definition. It took me 15 minutes to figure out how to allow it to set reminders and then later found out it can't even support playing music from YOUTUBE MUSIC. (Or any other music app) What?! And the worst part is gh6they have built in a bug that crashes the app should you try to revert back to the original assistant that could actually do things.
A once great app now decaying. I used to use assistant to reply to texts, calls, set reminders and calendar events, usually from the search bar. For some reason that no longer works, and the reminders don't pop up. The app is degraded in every way, I presume because of Google's push to their new ai. Rip assistant, to be added to the list of projects Google abandons.
