I've been with Gurushots 8 years & still haven't won a challenge to become "guru status". There are lots of bugs & crashes to this app. Some days I can't see things like when I go to teams as an example. That's just one of many. I ask myself why do I keep playing? Maybe I feel obligated to support my team. It's a break from reality maybe. I just wish it would work correctly. Other than all that I do enjoy it, simply because I love photography.
Locked out of my account and never receive any email to change or update my password. Having trouble getting a response from customer support. Refferd to a bot that cant understand the question. Bad customer service. Great idea and enjoyed the app, for what it is. But being locked out of the account and the thought of starting over just makes me want to uninstall.
This app used to be very fun, now it seems like a "pay to win" type of app. Back in the day keys were only used to boost a photo in a challenge. Now they're needed to join half of the challenges that are available as well as creating a team. Also you used to get at least 1 (sometimes more) swaps, keys, or fills when you completed a challenge. Now it seems like you get something about 50 percent of the time. Sorry I refuse to pay for these things.
It started out fun. I am a hobbyist photographer and I figured this would be great to kill time and see where I "measure up." It was fun for a while but then I ended up at the level of Master and I've stagnated there for the past 6 months. Other reviews are totally accurate that if you want to win you must spend money for exposure. They say its unbiased but all I ever see wining competions are Gurus themselves. I know my photography is not bad and better than some of the "Gurus" on this app.
They turned a really cool idea and devolved into a cashgrab. I played this "game" nearly 8 years now and it inspired me as a photographer to take prompts and challenge my eye and editing skills. However, voting is now an arbitrary thing and you must engage to remain active (I don't want to engage with the app daily). So however much casual you decide to give it, they still bombard you with pre-payments and superficial galleries or showcases with predatory paywalls.
The problem with this is app is that in order move up in the ranks you need to vote for the best photos. Which wouldn't be a problem if everyone were honest but apparently people just vote to fill up their exposure bar. So you end up with people's snap chat selfies higher ranked than legitimate shots that people put time and money into. Another irritating problem is that they want you to pay to swap photos and and refill your exposure bar . B's we are already let you use our content. Content is King and you wouldn't have an app without it. On top of that you have to pay entry fees to be included in galleries and magazines. So much meh. There are better, less time consuming ways to stroke your ego, friends.
Good idea but unfortunately dull. It's essentially uploading pictures (who knows if they still belong to you, didn't read terms of service), voting, and giving in to that little voice of pettiness when your picture isn't the one at the top. I can see how it'd be more exciting to a more competitive and serious photographer. But to the average Joe such as myself, upload-vote-visibility-potential reward gets repetitive. Good community though.
I was able to finally sign in after several attempts. The app finally let me sign in, then I went to go join a challenge but I couldn't because it was "locked" and I needed a key to unlock it so I tried another one and it said the same thing so I tried another challenge just to be told the same thing again. So since when did we need keys to enter challenges??? That is some bulls***!!! I will not pay for keys, screw this app!!!
The 'game' part of this app seems to be paying to play it. A lot of the submissions are no longer traditional photographs, they're so heavily edited; they're artistic pictures but not photos. You can't advance unless you pay or have no time and can sit and vote all day to boost your shots. Work on a version where an algorithm determines what a user sees, not who paid the most to boost their shots and I might come back.
I have played Gurushots since at least 2018. It’s had its ups and downs. I love photo and art competitions, and this is the best photo competition app I have found. But in all that time, I have never gotten past simple Guru level. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Also, I hate popups. The results popups take way too much time. Sometimes, I just need a couple of seconds to play while I'm in a rush between things. And I am not a fan of Turbo. I strongly disagree with what is supposedly a better pic.
Very well designed app for Photographers of all levels. I don't agree with the voting "algorithms" which prevent you from getting votes at strategic times (usually when you're about to level up). Winning a challenge has eluded me thus far. But I don't disagree with the elected winners. Shots are beautiful and well thought-out at that level. And other than slippery algorithms that seem to be designed make you purchase bundles, etc.

It is easy to use, I haven't had any issues with it. Even if I had, it was resolved fairly quickly. Edited : there is fairy a lot of issues . Something is always getting messed up. Buggy . Now they introduced battles and it is so useless and I think it's causing more problems. If you play battles you get nothing, but just a badge. Not even any points or swaps, you get first place and no reward at all. This more about making money. Still I like it made friends. I improved a lot on photography.
The contests are fun, but the app itself is a mess. All of your active contests appear on a SINGLE massive feed with no organization whatsoever. Buttons, titles, text, numbers, badges, icons, meters, clutter the entire screen. Who designed this godawful user interface?!? There are a lot of other little glitches. The shopping panel often doesn't load. Image selection isn't reliable (tapping on an image to enter in a contest or swap does nothing, so I am unable to enter those contests). I sometimes get random photos entered in contests I never joined. Messages often block the bottom part of the app. Unfortunately, the desktop website is also kind of glitchy (The "submit vote" doesn't work in any browser for me).
Good game in theory, flawed voting and standings. Pretty much it's supposed to be based on photography, though much of the photos that are most popular are not actually good photos or photography and sometimes don't even match the theme. People also definitely don't use their own photos and can use any photos they like. If I could upload a photo of the most recent contest I would. Boosting photos are worthless. Frustrating app really if you actually enjoy photography and work hard at it.
The concept of GuruShots is interesting and completely different from any other photography app. I like the challenges which force you to focus on a specific theme. In addition, the voting feature is really cool if done properly. However, the innovative aspects of GuruShots are also its weak points. If you want to fill the exposure gauge you have to keep voting. Nothing wrong with that if it wasn't for tons of more or less silly selfies that you have to go through (especially in the Newbie challenge) . Together with random photos of pets, feet, kids, and other meaningless stuff. I try my best to vote good shots but it's not easy to find meaningful ones and at the end it can take ages to fill the exposure. This probably also makes the voting system not very genuine: I can imagine people voting on anything just to get the exposure up as quickly as possible. On a side note, the user level seems not working very well: I have about 5,000 gs points and somehow I'm still stuck on newbie level. All in all, GuruShots is an awesome idea which, unfortunately, tends to become tedious easily. Unless you are willing to pay for boosts, of course.
The app is fun and generally easy to use. Its a quite enjoyable way to learn more about photography and practice and refine technique. However, they need some improvements on how they announce upcoming challenges. You can't see exactly when a challenge will start, it just says "soon". And there's no way to get a notification that a challenge has started. So you spend a day or two taking photos for a specific upcoming challenge and then you see that its already started and theres 2 hours left.
I really like the concept and functionality, however I was unable to add any photos after the prompt to add your "four best". I tried on multiple occasions to add from different sources and it would show that they were being uploaded but they never became available in my profile. If you can fix that I might be back but for now i have uninstalled.
I keep trying to upload a picture for one of the challenges and it's not working. I've closed and re-opened the app, it gets rid of it completely. It won't let me vote to raise my stats for the challenge either, it doesn't show my exposure either, as if it doesn't exist. It automatically puts it in the mid-range when it should have it listed as 'low.' I have a Samsung Galaxy S9, please fix this issue and MAYBE I'll rank this higher.
So I downloaded gurushots when it first started and loved the idea of submitting pictures to categories and getting exhibited etc. I loved it. But, as time had gone on, I feel like I'm clicking out of ads the whole time for other competitions that they're doing and it frustrates me beyond words. I think it's great they're growing, but I can't handle all the pop ups in app. Please stop this!
I like the app but it's buggy. Whenever I try to upload photos from device, it shows my albums but ALL my pictures are greyed out, as in you can't see what your uploading. Whenever I try to go to a different menu or something it keeps saying "Network Connection Error", it doesn't go away even when you leave the app, you have to force close it. I got some dope pictures but can't upload them because I can't see anything.
