I've downloaded this because it's better than nothing, but it needs some serious sorting out. Not at all intuitive, the old fires near me app was way better. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" (Edit) uninstalled, beyond woeful, map view shows nothing, to see fires I've had to trawl through a list of names that are unfamiliar to me. I'll resort to google search for my emergency info. 0/5*
These incident maps need to include a scale bar approximated to the nearest 5, 10 or 50km depending on magnification!!! Also should include fire size and status (under control or otherwise) when you initially tap on the icon, not later when you've tapped for more info. This is especially useful when there are many simultaneous fires, and anyway the icons block the fire perimeter until you zoom in quite a lot.
If the old app wasn't broken, why fix it? It felt simple, fast and efficient. This one feels clunky. I can't smoothly zoom in and out of the map. The clock symbol at the top of my phone (samsung note 20 ultra) starts flashing like crazy and turns into double icons as soon as I open the app. Making a selection in the list view feels like it takes ages to load. If I'm using the app, I'm trying to get important info, quickly. I've switched over to Bushfire.io and so far it seems much better.
Bring back Fires near me app. This app is terrible. As others have said, very clunky. When you open, it goes to a map of Australia, not your location. When you put in a watch zone, the map is only half the screen size, the rest of the map is taken up with the legend, which makes it very hard to navigate the map on the phone. When you click on a fire, sometimes it gives you the information, sometimes nothing happens.
Generally like the app, BUT... Alerts don't have a link back to the map. Please at least put the relevant Watch Zone name on the alert, as some people need to see the map to judge how far away the fire is. I'd like to know which of my loved ones are possibly in danger & street addresses on alerts don't always easily provide this info. Hitting the back button on the App or phone just closes the App. Please change this, as it just adds stress. Other apps can do it, so you can too. Please?!
The previous version of "Fires Near Me" was excellent. This new version is not user friendly during an emergency situation. When an incident occurs it takes you to your actual location and not your watch zone. There was a fire in my watch zone last week and I was 300km away... It took me there instead! When there is an incident there's too much tapping to find out whats happening! This version really sucks!
This version is nowhere as good as the previous version. It doesn't show the fire front or the burned area. It is not possible to watch the progression of the fire and the updates are hours old. After two hours of battle, the report still shows zero hectares burned and "Being contained" How does that differ from the old "Out of control"? Apart from letting you know that there is a fire in the area it seems impossible to learn much from the app.
Very handy, especially during summer. My only complaint is when receiving a notification of a nearby fire, you are taken only to the description of the fire, and are unable to view on the map without exiting and reopening the app. **Update** now has a new name, and need to set up watch zones, because the ones that I already had are now gone and I was not getting notifications any more. Watch zones show an option to give notifications for floods but cannot turn them on.
Worked fine before. The app is a mess now. At the moment, the app has set a default so that I cannot receive emergency alerts for myself, or any of my watch zones. Let's hope there isn't a bushfire anytime soon. I don't understand why it was changed. It worked fine before. A lot of people depended on this service during the worst of our bushfire seasons. I hope someone fixes it soon.
The old fires near me was better. I was hoping this app would be better after the last update, but hasn't improved. Apart from being quite clunky, sometimes it takes up to three times opening and closing the app to get my location and fires on the map. Quite often all I get is my location on the entire map of Australia, then if I zoom in there are no fires on the map anyway, even though there are 30 fires on the list. Very annoying and makes me swear a lot.
The detail in reports is often cut off (eg. lists of affected suburbs/towns almost always have the names clipped). The copy link for a warning doesn't give a link to the specific warning, but just link to the app on Play Store. And copy/paste of warnings is not allowed. These last two points make it useless for advising friends of upcoming warnings.
Very useful, particularly the watch zones. It would be much more useful though with a link from the details to the map location. Also while monitoring the home base while on an overseas holiday, the map defaults to the overseas location. If possible it would be better to default to the current location if in NSW, else to the last accessed location.
Can no longer access the old Fires Near Me app, lost it when I installed the new app, which showed the exact location of our farm/house accurately. This app tries to find our location relying on where our satellite service comes from or our poor mobile phone reception. Checked this out again this morning and gives our location as 100 km plus from where we are. Can't find anyway of selecting location on map like we used to. Useless. Not in a flood zone, can't comment on that.
Not user friendly since the big update. It defaults to showing my current location instead of my watch zone and the map is clunky to zoom and navigate. It is also irritating that it shows the distance between my location and the incident, instead of the distance between my watch zone pin and the incident. The old app was working fine, I hope they fix this before the fire season.
Watch zones need improvement. I get an alert for every single nothing grass fire in my area, including false alarms. A lot of these have gone by the time I see the notification, so that I started ignoring them completely before turning it off. The alert also does not link you to the actual fire description on the map, which is not very useful. There should be a minimum size or duration threshold for fires which trigger a notification.
This app should serve one purpose. To tell me if there's a 'fire near me' instead it insists on bugging me with useless notifications with no option to turn them off. I understand that there's fire restrictions, its hounded to us in the media everyday. Surprisingly i'm not out there constantly lighting fires and I dont need an app to remind me everyday not to light fires.
It sends a notification about a fire but the fire doesn't appear on the map or list, only in the notification screen. This has happened multiple times, no way to know if the fire is still active. I liked the idea of fire and flood warnings in one app but this is useless. Fires near me was simple and worked properly, why weren't flood warnings just added to that. 😬
This app is a major, major step backwards from Fires Near Me. As others have stated there's far too much "tapping" required to get to the important info on a fire. Seems impossible to delete a watch zone. When I do open the app it zooms so far in on my actual location I can basically see what I'm eating for breakfast and need to spend five minutes minimising the annoying map so that I can view the fires in my local watch zone. This app needs A LOT of work to be user friendly.
The app doesn't remember the sort order in the list view screen, I'm constantly switching it to "Distance From My Watchzone" because its quicker than waiting for a location fix, and even then it seems some incidents don't have proper location information and say they're 0km away which they aren't. Othet than that small annoyance the app srems to be very useful.
Really wish this app would allow silent notifications for things like Total Fire Bans and the like. I have this app as always on and to override my do not disturb as I live on a farm with 1 road out so need to know if there's a fire or flood going to prevent evacuation, but I'm constantly woken up by notifications for weather warnings and fire bans. Aside from this, the app is clunky and really needs a redesign. The old Fire app was great, but this just doesn't meet the mark.
