The app has become useless. Every time you go to use it, it forces you to set up a pass key for "easier" login but then you can't use the pass key. I've now set up 3 pass keys to access to my information and STILL cannot access my app. It used to be great and functional, quick to review your account, etc. Not anymore.
I tried setting up my account after downloading the app as recommended. During this process it asks if I want e-statements to avoid paying for paper ones. I try to accept it, but there's an error. It sends me to the webpage to try, then tries to get me to download and use the app I already downloaded. I can't accept e-statements. Then I can't set up a passkey or verify my identity through the third party system because it keeps crashing. Any way to manage this problem crashes or won't load.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to see much of this app since it will not let me LOG IN! I got to see my HSA twice after battling the app and the desktop before getting locked out, again, by a "technical problem" error. And now I have no access. Then I was told by customer service that I have to be transferred to a passkey member to fix my issue, who were not available because their workday ended. Why a separate team? Why make it so hard to log in, and let customer service help with issues?
Non functional. The web version requires you to create a passkey, and it does not work in the Web unless you download the app. The app won't let me log in, telling me that my phone number does not match their records (even though it's the same phone number I used to log in via the web). Logging in is utterly impossible. Straight up garbage.
This is one of the worst apps I've ever had the displeasure of "interacting." Quotes are because I CAN'T INTERACT WITH IT BECAUSE I CAN'T LOG IN! Like other reviewers, it wants a passkey, but unlike any other app that I deal with, you can't "try another way" and just enter the password (which is already set up!) or get a text or email. It's not just the app, it's a low budget company that doesn't have a clue. I've been at 3 other companies that gave us an HSA, Fidelity and always flawless.
So far this has been one of the most frustrating financial apps I've ever used. There are constant errors when trying to upload documents, it doesn't have some of the features available that the website has, the passkey requirement doesn't work half the time, preventing me from being able to login at all. Hypothetically the available features should make basic transactions and monitoring simple but when they don't work like this and I can't access or do anything in my account, it's not worth it.
Broken Passkey makes this app unusable. I can't log into HE's site without the MFA auth from the app & I can't log into the app because it never finds any of the 3 passkeys I've already set up so I have to create another one which is only usable once. I'm locked out of my account and HE's tech support has been historically useless & unhelpful. EDIT 2/19/26: they seem to have fixed the problem as I can log in now. Leaving at lower rating as warning to other app makers to test more thoroughly.
I can't log into the app. I enter my username, hit continue, and then it spins and spins and spins loading, and then it will say no pass keys have been found. I don't understand why I just can't type in a username and password? I called for support and the gentleman said that he hasn't heard of any login issues. I think that based on the other reviews, this app really needs to improve the login process.
passkeys are frustrating, unintutive, and annoying. i just wanted to log in on my computer. to do that I had to get a verification text, only to be told I had to download the app, which needed to me to sign in with ANOTHER verification text, to then tap a screen on my phone in order to log in on my computer. who came up with this? why does anyone think this is a good idea? absolutely awful experience.
garbage. forced to use by company. which I'm forced to use by the state of Missouri. forced to link passkey to phone lock screen as in biometric or pin, so it literally will not work w/o. they claim it's more secure but if you can open the phone you have access to the app. directly! they immediately started charging for paper statements, the settings were set for them to have full access to the "money" including open investment w/o consent. 2 hrs on phone to get a login, 2 months still no card
A lot of people describe the passkey issue as the root of their frustration. I didn't have any of those issues and was able to set mine up through Google and Samsung Pass. Now what I do take issue with is the simple task of trying to attach a photo or file to a transaction. The buttons don't work! I've restarted the app, restarted my phone, uninstalled and reinstalled the app. It doesn't work. 🤬
The app will not save pass keys. I have several confirmation emails where I have correctly set up my pass key, but every time I access the app I get a message saying no pass keys have been set up and it makes me go through the whole process again to access my account. I can't just select skip passkey and log-in traditionally with my username and password. It forces me to set up another pass key and then doesn't save it.
They are trying to roll out pass keys and direct you to use their app. Only problem is that they encounter technical errors literally every time you try to do it. App needs a fix to actually work and you can't login the app without the pass key. 3 months later edit: same problem no fixes. support was no help. Edit: still no fix months six months in. they may let you login but you have to send a picture of your state issued ID to do so. 2FA is used by so many places. why can't we use that?
The passkey was a rough battle, finally got through with my samsung passkey. Once in, the UI isnt bad, pretty easy. But the passkey is really bad, im very good with security and this did not want to work at first. Also it looks like if you use something like bit warden or others, you get shafted. If they fix the passkey, easily 2 more stars.
Kiterally impossible to setup the passkey and therefore I can't even get into my account. The passkey setup will ask for my mobile number and send a code, then I'll enter the code. After that, despite it confirming I've entered the right code, I get an error saying there's an issue on their end and I can't continue. What genius decided to implement a passkey retirement, unlike every other company in existence right now, and didn't even make sure it works? What a joke.
Passkeys are not ready. I like the app's internals. However, forcing me to use a passkey is not cool. it would be alright if I I could use the passkey of my choice, but the app fails to setup passkeys with Microsoft Authenticator and Bitwarden. On Android, you must use Google authenticator. However, they don't tell you this. You have to figure that out on your own. These are amateurs. They are preventing me from using the passkey of my choice since passkeys managers are device-wide.
The requirement to set up a passkey is ridiculous but also impossible. I have tried countless times to get it to work and the app always says it encountered a technical issue. I've had an account with Health Equity since 2018 but now that it's the new year (2026), and I want to make a bulk deposit, I guess it's time to start looking for a new HSA provider, since I literally can't log into my account (this is true for desktop too). Astounding.
I've set up my passkey and when I log into the website on my desktop, it says I don't have access and tells me to log out and back in on an endless loop. Try the mobile app and it tells me there are technical difficulties when I try logging in. Terrible app/company, I legitimately have no way to access my account information. This is completely unacceptable.
I kept having trouble setting up passkey on my phone(Pixel 9 pro), and I didn't realize that it requires Google Password Manager to store the passkey until I gone through troubleshooting with the support team. The app should have been clear about the setup requirement, it simply says "something went wrong" when it failed to generate the passkey.
App is a mess. Extremely cluttered and messy screens. Now requires passkey login. You can't even login to the website without having your phone!! And the website is full of ads! I don't want ads on a financial website!!!! Can't link to Quicken or other financial planning apps. Can't easily determine balance in cash account vs investment account.
