this is my favorite app to make friends with now. there's slight language barriers but that's also interesting to see, I have not seen one scammer yet. I get to talk to people all over the world, lots of free options. lots of women too. honestly, not one scammer. boo, hoop, purp, bumble, all trash. this is one of the BEST apps to talk to real people and learn about culture. even matched with people in my state. I'm surprised with the amount of conversations I'm getting, I can't keep up.

The app and concept are both amazing. You can meet many friends and get to know people from what feels like a different world. I've been learning Russian myself lately and there a lot of kind people willing to correct you and kindly offer help. I also just wanted to say that there seems to be some crashing, backgrounding, and notification issues as well, and I really wish that it was way more affordable to get a lifetime membership so that I could add more languages, etc. Besides that perfect

Ads ads ads! You must dismiss pop-ups! More pop-ups! More ads! Then you must deal with the people. The couple I've met in person have had ulterior motives. One tried to recruit me for a cult, the other was using the app for what it's designed for, finding dates. That's what all of the features encourage. Location updates, pay a premium to find out who's in your neighborhood.

the free trial was great. way better than Duolingo with much more to do. just be careful of which membership you're getting. I thought it would be everything for 160$ but it ended up just connecting me to more people to talk to in other languages. the AI conversations are great, talking to ppl is great and the classrooms are great. figure out what works best for you and use that membership.

The app is pretty amazing to be honest. Messaging is free, and though there's a limited translation, I can handle that just fine with a translation app so it's not issue. Met people who want to study and teach as well. The VoiceRoom has been really helpful too, BUT there's a concern. When I encounter issues with my network connection, it says "LEAVE"... . Edit: The problem has been fix in the updated version. Thank you for your hard work. This app and its team are amazing ❤

Most people want to be friends, they arent helpful for language learning. They have learning sections on the app but you have to pay for the full version, even if you are able to make a friend, the app deletes chat history and makes you pay to see chat history. No thanks.. Edit: i tried the app again after a year for 6 months. If you pay for the VIP its only good for having unlimited translations and live stream time, I have friends abroad now but it hasn't helped my learning.

Made a new friend through this app! I like the translation options and the voice note option. The video call option was spotty, though it's not like I use it for super long conversations anyways. My main issue is that I could only add 1 of my native languages. I speak Spanish and English natively, but I had to choose 1 for this app. I think it would be good to let people list more than 1 native language. That way, I could help people with both Spanish skills AND English skills.

I like the new hellowords feature. its good to pick up new vocabulary but I dont like that studying is limited to one category a time. Unless you pay to study more. I'm already a VIP member so an additional subscription on top of that is ridiculous. The audio lessons are nice also but again another individual subscription feature. I'd be willing to pay a few more dollars a month for a bundle, but I wont pay for each separately. No thanks.

Unfortunately, if you want to get much out of this app, you have to pay money. If you're talking to someone you can only translate what they say 5 times a day, and there are many other limitations. I was fine with that, so I purchased a premium plan. But I found out that the main thing I bought it for (the learning center where you can study and learn new words) is a different subscription all together!!! I'm premium and I STILL have FIVE MINUTES of study time every TEN HOURS!!

Decent app for practicing language learning although it takes more effort than it should. Lots of spam/people who dm "hi" with no profile filled out (maybe bots)? There should be a requirement to have at least some of your profile filled out before you message Notifications should be able to be fine-tuned more. E.g. i don't want to be notified when someone I'm following creates a voiceroom, but there doesn't seem to be a way to fine-tune that without disabling all post notifications entirely.

It's not as good as it seemed. I did meet a couple of people in here, but there aren't just many people to talk to. On top of that, it is getting buggy. I mean, my chats aren't saved if I delete the app and reinstall it. An audio advertisement about Bumble(dating app) pops out of nowhere when I'm using the app. When I go back from a user's profile, I get a quick advertisement(in one second), and it dissappears. It's getting really buggy and annoying. It's time to delete this app.

I love HelloTalk! I feel like my Japanese is getting better, but it's actually fun to learn! I've met some awesome people on there. The translator works very well. You can download a Japanese keyboard to go with it and type Japanese words and I've felt like that's been a very helpful combination for my learning. You do however have to pay if you want access to certain things on there, such as giving gifts, lesson articles, and unlimited translation.

Works very well, lacking stickers (unless I can't find the others) but the app is very fast and very simple to figure out. It's unfortunate that there isn't a word-for-word dictionary lookup, but perhaps that's something that can be added in the future. Edit: 7 years later, I've gotta lower my rating. The app is basically unusable is you don't pay. Everything you press leads you to the subscription screen. Nobody messages back anymore. Notifications don't seem to arrive on time or at all.

I really like the concept - it makes it super easy to learn from native speakers (the best way!). I really don't like how the app limits how much you can translate, and I have to either pay, or take an extra step and use Google/Microsoft. You can't even just remove the translate button; each time I tap a message instead of holding it, I'm presented with an ad to pay for the app. It calls itself free to communicate, but it's not as free as it sounds.

I personally really like this app, and have learned quite a bit just within a couple days of having it, especially through corrections of my "moments" posts. Speaking of moments, I wish there was an option in moments to be able to post videos, as there's some clips of my hobbies I would like to share. If there is a way to post video clips and I just missed it, then this critique can be disregarded :)

This is a very good app because I can learn languages by speaking to native people and not to AI. The people are very friendly and serious about learning foreign languages. I also can help those who are learning English. The only downfall to HT that it is very limited. A subscription is needed to do the extra activities, make more friends and have unlimited translations. I have to use Google translate to get the translations when I run out of my daily translations which I only get about 5 daily.

Tried using it to help me learn Japanese. I didn't find this app to be a helpful at all, in all honesty. It's mostly just foreign guys trying to hit on Japanese girls as something of a substitute for Tinder. Out of 10 people on here, maybe 1 or 2 were genuinely interested in helping TEACH Japanese rather than solely taking in English lessons or seeking more attention on their posts. Of course, the scene of different languages might be different. This was solely my take as a Japanese learner.

While this is a nice app for regular language partner use in a variety of languages, there is a MAJOR issue regarding synchronizing with the web version. Messages regularly delete themselves, and are wiped from the phone and the computer, despite being normal conversation that does that violate any rules. It's purely a matter of synchronizing messages, which fails more often than not. Makes keeping track of conversations incredibly frustrating. Both phone and computer connections are good.

I learned a lot of good information on this app when I had it. Unfortunately, my registered email on my account got deleted, and I couldn't log back in or make a new account because it's locked on that old profile. I'd love to get the app again and work on it more, but it doesn't seem like that's ever going to happen. I've messaged the app's help center, but I never got a reply.

It's an amazing companion app for learning languages. Finding people to talk to is easy. I really want to give this 5 stars, but the number of notifications I get from this app is insane. The number of people who try to talk to me is enormous, some of these people send me 5 or 6 messages at a time before I can respond, and the app sends me a notification for each one. It turns my phone into a constantly chiming device. This app needs to really limit the number of notifications it sends.
