changed from 5 star due to the deceptive practices they use when trying to cancel. You have to call to cancel but good look getting someone on the phone. I ordered a new debit card but they still found a way to take money out. After calling my bank (USAA) they couldn't dispute the charges despite being charged twice in 2 days because it was listed as a one time payment despite it being a recurring subscription service. Great content though.
Overall, I like the app, but the lack of customisation for push notifications is incredibly annoying. The only option I have enabled is "Breaking news", but I still get 10+ push notifications for run of the mill articles. "Try this Restaurant we Reviewed" is not a breaking news article I need you to interrupt my day to tell me about. I'm going to have to disable all notifications which really disappoints me. I actually do want to hear about urgent major stories, but sadly, that's not an option.
I subscribed thinking I would use it more often then I did. After about 6 months I decided it was a waste of my money. In order to cancel you must call, it can't be done via the app. So I called and have cancelled my subscription twice.......and they are still debiting my account. Ridiculous, luckily the bank is able to block further transactions from here out. Bad business.
Print options are important to me. We like to do sudoko and jumble before 7 am but paper is not here. So we use e-version and print the puzzles. They are not easy to print a large copy to work with. (The print button is hard to find.)
Easy to read at the time most convenient for you. Covers important topics locally and nationally. The app works great.
The app is worth 4 stars for the news articles. However, the comics don't work often and when they do work they are frequently misformated. This is frustrating.
The Houston Chronicle is always on TOP of the Latest News in Sports !!!
The App is horrible. You have to have a digital access subscription to use it. However if you are in the App and click on a news link it automatically takes you out of the app to a chrome web version. Which even when you sign in it does not recognize your account and keeps blocking the articles. In fact it happens on every link to an article from any social media site instead of it opening in the App. Maybe it works better for Apple but on Android it is worthless. Have to do everything desktop.
New updates and changes make navigation through and through, easy peasy!! I like the two page old school newspaper look on my monitor. On the app, so cool and set updates or notifications is the way to go. Set it to get what you want to come up first! I still get my Sunday paper delivered tho! The funnies come in full color. I'm happy 😊
The app has improved significantly. The problem I had last spring, with many links taking me to the wrong article, had been fixed. The awful click bait and are mostly gone, too. It works pretty well. But the app still has almost no national or world news, even though those are in the print edition. About the only national or world news I can see with the app is when there's some local angle in the story. Give us a wider spectrum of news and this could be a 5 star ago.
Very, very well done news app. I've used (and still use) other apps for international or local city news in the past (mainly the BBC). I was pleasantly surprised how good the Houston Chronicle app was. Not just for local articles, but also the other features like games and comics. It's like having a print copy on your phone. Highly recommended, especially if you're a Houston area resident and care about local news.
I live outside of Tex, so it's nice being able to get the local news. But $6 is a bit much for something that only has application functionality. I'd be down to pay the subscription if this app had a Widget feature so that I could read the stories from my home screen, instead of having to always search through my apps. Please look at the BBC news app widgets for an idea.
app won't let me sign in with my existing hard copy and iPad subscription. several previous reviews raised same issue, so I believed chronicle would have fixed by now. obviously not. after the app allowed me to read 3 articles, it now prevents me from reading any additional articles this month. so although I am a subscriber, this app won't let me access the chronicle routinely. not much of an app.
It doesn't recognize my sign-in if I connect to a story through the newsletter. It acts like I'm not a subscriber and won't let me read the articles. I have to back out, go to the app and hope that I can still find the story that was featured in the newsletter that I receive as part of my digital subscription.
I pay a monthly fee for use of this app. The links no longer function correctly. If you click the link it leads to another article. When I contact technical help, the repeated response is they cannot help. The Chronicle is a valued publication, but this app no longer works.
The app is very good. One complaint I have is that when I follow a notification to a story I get a Chronicle-framed blank page which I have to close. Then I get a page which may or may not be the one in the notification, but usually I can navigate quickly to the story. Running Android 9 on a Moto G6.
I enjoy reading the Chronicle, e very day l have the best paper carrier.😅
My print newspaper subscription increased 50+% over the last few years. I finally said -"enough is enough." I canceled the print subscription I'd had since the 1980s. This app contains the complete digital edition of the newspaper. I read it every morning on my tablet.
The app works well nowadays, but I cannot for the life of me understand how they are prioritizing news stories in the feed. In the Sports section, it's almost impossible to find stories about the Rockets, our professional team that is 2nd in the Western Conference and nearing the playoffs. I have to literally go to the search bar to find their coverage. Meanwhile I'm fed every flavor of meaningless speculation on the Texans offseason. I know this is a football town, but this is ridiculous.
