Absolutely lousy experience with this app. Every two months it freezes, does not open, and needs a full re-install and scan of IDs. I've been caught outside twice in shops, stuck because the lousy app froze. With all services are connected to the mobile app, I can't log on the website without the verification from phone, can't make online payments since the mobile app needs to verify purchases, and can't send bank to bank transfers for shops that don't accept cards.
Being a customer for a few years now. This app still lack the features of.most other online bank apps. On top of that, I wish the testing and verification was done more carefully. Everytime there was a major update, something stopped working. Most recently, on the last update, the security key generator stopped working and since then it's not possible to use the app or login into the web application :(
HSBC's app is so far behind Starling and Monzo, they've tried to implement payment confirmations but instead of a notification you have to manually open the app to see the prompt, and if you already have the app open it doesn't work until you close it and reopen. To get a code for online banking you also have to close and reopen. For credit cards there is no option to setup a direct debit or make a payment in the app, on online banking there is only the only to do it from an HSBC account.
Much better in app than my initial sign up with HSBC earlier last yr 2024 or poss late 23. App then was a nightmare to navigate trying to find transactions infuriating! Now everything is better organised & easier to find. Replacement bank cards were received super fast after request! I'm satisfied, app works for my banking requirements. It is now easy to navigate and I can easily find my transactions unlike before update. Paying in and transferring out no problems.
Great little Basic Account for my everyday needs. I don't require all the bells n whistles or free insurance etc so this works just fine for me. I didn't want an overdraft, just Direct Debits and Standing Orders, Instant Bank Transfer and this account has them all. Customer service is great, once you get past the Bot, you can speak to a real person, who sorted out my issue promptly and had sound knowledge of the area of banking I was querying.
This app has now obviously become a container for accessing the account via a browser. I'm trying to log in via the app, and it asks me to open my app to verify it's me! Crazy! I can only assume this hasn't been tested at all! UPDATE: I can't even log in online now either, as it wants me to generate a code with the app but the app won't give me the option to do that!
The app consistently gets into a state where it crashes on startup with no error messages, about a week or so after re-installation. Clearing the data has no effect. Re-installing and re-registering is the only option. This would be bad enough as is, but the app is also required to log into HSBC online banking on the web. This is some of the worst user experience I've ever seen.
Latest version, doesn't work with Android, I just got an Android device and I'm unable to setup the app, initially saying I had too many devices registered, I have it on my iPad and iPhone and normally I can have up to 3 devices registered, but Android App doesn't seem to have this rule, so unregistered my iPad and iPhone and now I was able to progress further, but without success, it asked me to take pictures of my Driving licence and a selfie to complete the setup, but this always failed.
So I spend close to my credit card limit on 2 big purchases. I get an email warning that I'm close to the limit so I try to pay off the card. Not allowed and the balance is still showing zero. 30 hours later and same thing. Still can't pay off the balance as it's not processed yet. Why can't I just go positive balance for a while? If I get another direct debit whilst you are so slow at processing the transaction (even though it's reflected in available spending) why would I have to pay a fine
Please sort out push notifications in this ridiculous app. I have this app installed on two phones one of which is brand new. Push notifications are erratic they stop working for no apparent reason then start working again two weeks later for a day then stop again yet push notifications from anyone else work flawlessly on both phones. Both phones are setup correctly for your notifications including your app. Even uninstall/reinstall makes no difference. This all started after Nov/Dec 25 update.
REALLY INCONVENIENT. App refuses to open unless I uninstall my antivirus everytime I need to interact with MY money. How is that more secure? Refusal to work with antivirus means I don't get any notifications, so I have to manage my finances from memory. And the Feb 26 upgrade means I now have to open the app to approve credit card transactions, which reliably both freezes my device and causes transactions to fail even after approval. Time to find myself a more tractable service provider. :(
Its nice, but would be if great you got tax certificates for each account in tax season showing you interest earned, instead of having to calculate each month. Also having a standard date stamped bank confirmation letter on the app would be so helpful that you could download when needed.
It's great apart from one major issue, some payments like on Amazon or other sites you need to verify using the HSBC app and opening the HSBC app forces form resubmission on most web pages and apps which erases the information typed in. It's a safety feature that makes paying for things impossible. Please fix this because it's extremely frustrating.
Frequently stops working, again! Had been much better before latest update. Now I have to reboot my phone every time before I use it. This is not an issue with any of my other banking/ credit card apps. Why is it so unreliable, and what was done in the last update that has made it as bad as it was 18 months ago?
The app is nice. Now, since a recent update, we now need to include a reason for why we transferring money, and there are very limited options to choose. This isn't really needed and truly annoying. And we're still not able to take printscreens. Sometimes we need to do that
The app has certainly improved over time, but there are some frustrating limitations. Namely, you can set savings goals, but you can't actually see them listed in one place. That screen does exist, but it only appears when you set a new goal, there's no button to get there. I'd also like to see the name of the saving goal on the app homepage. When you are encouraged to open multiple "Flex Saver" accounts for different pots, it'd be nice to have a way to distinguish them.
works well I've just got 1 bone to pick: why every time I open the app does it look like it's having a seizure instead of just going straight to log in (fingerprint in my case) first you see the logo then you just see a series of blank pages flashing by and only then can I sign in. the app gets good updates but for some reason this is still here it's really annoying please fix it hsbc.
7 Feb 2026: 1) still not possible to view card verification transactions. 2) hh:mm:ss not provided for transactions. 10 Oct 2025: Balance was corrected. I have not updated the app, so I am not sure if the problem is in the app or bank servers. The email link provided by the app dev/support (?) wasn't valid. --- I have reported the following app issues over phone, email and chat for more than a week: Incorrect account balance, no response from app support.
Notification telling me to look at the new features to make managing money easier, click notification, taken to white screen where nothing loads, close app, reopen app, no attempt made to show new features and play store description doesn't mention any new features. great 🤦♂️ edit: actually read what I said, I'm not contacting support with help on new features I don't know about. if you want to advertise them, advertise them, if you don't, they won't be used. It's a you problem.
Poor after the latest update. I want to make payments by connecting to my bank. I used to generate a security code, now I have to approve via the app which wants to scan a qr code. That's impossible when the screen I'm paying on is also on my mobile device 🤷♀️. Come on, try harder. Other banks have this nailed.
