Hard to cancel and Gannett (Parent Company) keeps raising the price. Even with a subscription, each article has thousands of ads. It's a total scam.
update 11/23: rating lowered yet again. i'm a subscriber and would like to post comments on articles but for some reason no working keyboard loads on my android; used to work well but it's been this way for a few months. this should be easy but it just ain't. 1 star. update 10/22: rating lowered. subscribers shouldn't have to deal with full-screen pop-up ads on every story they read. 2 stars. update 11/21: app is functional (as opposed to "good") and not very customizable. 3 stars.
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU SUBSCRIBE!! They will change their monthly prices and not tell you. I joined for a $1 for a month from there they charged $7 a month for my subscription (which I agreed to). They then started charging me $10 halfway through the year WITHOUT informing me (this I DID NOT AGREE to). I have called 3 times for a refund since I never agreed to the charges and have yet to receive one. On top of all of this the app never worked. I had to log in EVERY time in order to use my sub
Get ready to be bombarded with ads and pop ups throughout your reading experience. Enjoy because that is what your paying for. App is unstable when reading the e-paper in zoom mode. Horrible experience. Getting ready to cancel even when I'm getting a discount of half the subscription.
Just a terrible experience. Purchase a membership and it never activated. After spending the week on trying to gain access they still weren't able to give access to what I paid for. They refused a refund but at least stated they cancelled the autorenewal so I wouldn't be charged more. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since the Star has been going downhill over the past 5ish years. Don't waste your money until they get some better systems and leadership
Update: app has not been loading content for days. Just gives an error App is very similar to the mobile site. The biggest difference is that you can't read or write comments on the articles. Overall, pretty easy to use and navigate.
Doesn't work overseas. Can't get to customer service or account to report missing paper. When I need to enlarge an article to read it, either clicking on article it still isn't big enough print or if I just zoom in, I find myself in a different article. It's just about useless.
Overall I like the app but it is infuriating to use because you have to log back in almost everytime you use it. It did not used to do this I am guessing it is something they changed in an update. I have notifications turned on and even those articles make you sign in.
I signed up for the Thurs/Sun delivery of the paper, and I count on the app for news on other days. It won't let me sign in and constantly tells me I'm using incorrect credentials even though they work on the website. The paper editions haven't been delivered in over a month, and the app doesn't work. What the heck am I paying for?
It's okay when it works. Past few days it's been telling me access is not available on mobile devices. Isn't this mobile app?? There is an option under settings for 'acct management' but doesn't contain any options to view or manage anything. After complaint, got email directing me a Tennessee newspaper site to actually sign in...but you have to use a computer (not phone or tablet) Calling this app seems like a stretch.
I'm a 40+ yr subscriber. When I visit the app for news, it knows who I am, they send me emails all the time, appears that I am signed in (offers me "sign out" but not sign in) but when I click on an article it tells me I must subscribe. VERY frustrating.
While reading a story the app resists scrolling and often bounces back to the top. Annoying to say the least. Also, this relates to the paper, not the app, but there's very little news now. Seems like 90% sports. And I like sports!
The reporting is decent, but this app is straight trash. Constantly logs out, log in is a painful process, suggested story algorithm constantly suggests stories that I never read (eg. high school sports). The app may cause me to cancel my subscription.
Too many ads make the app unusable... hope you like scrolling endlessly until you get pissed and close the app altogether. I already pay a subscription fee, the ads are like a giant F you (to read maybe half a dozen new articles). It'd prob be easier to grab a damn paper a couple times a week.
Accidentally signed out. None of the buttons that say "Sign In" are able to be tapped. Update 10/6/24: Still can't sign in to the app. Unacceptable. I'm paying for a subscription I can't use. Fix the app please.
This app is terrible now! I have to sign in multiple times to read stories. It doesn't open when I click on the link in an email like it used to. Whoever redesigned this app needs to go back to the old design! Crappy app! And I pay for this! If this continues I will drop this subscription! Fix it now!! RIDICULOUS!
Do not do any introductory offer. Turns into fraudulent activity. I did cancel before the end of the intro offer. Somehow they have managed to get my credit card info from Google Play. They don't know my real name because I don't use my real name on my Google account. But they've billed me for 2 full months on my credit card using a fictitious name. There is no credit card info shown for my account on the IndyStar website, but they've stored it somewhere because they charged me for 2 months.
This app used to work better. Requires sign in daily now. Seems like in trying to protect content from non-subscribers prevents subscribers from viewing content too...forcing multiple sign ins. And now it thinks I'm not a subscriber. Keeps getting worse!
Purely an issue with the app. The paper itself is fine. Very buggy for a large newspaper. There are days I am unable to read the paper at all yet alone when I'd like. You can bet, though, the subscription fee comes out of my bank on time and with no issue.
Like everyone else, even though I am logged into my subscriber account, I am constantly unable to read stories in the app because I am "not a subscriber." I am deleting the app and adding the website to my home screen and will read that way... However, It's sad that Gannett is run by people who don't care about local journalism.
