I loved K-9 before this update. But now it's so hard to distinguish between my accounts in the menu. Before, I'd given each one a different profile pic and color, so I always knew which account I was looking at. They also appeared in a set order, so I could navigate easily. Now 4 of my 5 accounts are labeled "GM," and the highlight color is the same for all 5. What?! AND each time I open an account, the list order shifts, so they're never in a predictable order! Wish there were a way to revert.
It crashed many times during setup. Can't get passed setup. Edited: After numerous attempts I identified the step at which the setup was crashing. After typing the password to log into my email account, making the PW visible would crash the app. Finally, I set it up. Nice app, simple, not many bells and whistles, works well with Google, Microsoft.
UPDATE 7/28/21 What did you do!? So many options gone and seriously, no option to view ALL accounts at once?? This was by far the best client I had ever found and I've been a user for years. I agree with so many people here, it's just become just a other regular single account app with this update. :-( OLD: 5 stars - By far the best and most complete mail app I have come across. The ease of use and the ability to customize every little detail makes an unbeatable combo.
Used this happily for years. But the recent change adds nothing useful, and takes away great features (can't set the notification light color, can't set the vibration pattern). And on my wife's phone, as well as a friend's, it simply doesn't send outgoing mail. No warnings, no apparent errors, messages in the Sent folder. But nobody receives them. I might roll my version back, despite being cumbersome. Or I might look around for other options. In its current form, I don't recommend this app.
I've used this app for several years, but the recent update reduced useability. After the update, one of my accounts can no longer send email due to an authentication issue, but the password for the account has not changed. I looked exhaustively, but I can't find the option in settings to re-enter the password. Without that ability this app is dead in the water. Also, it resurrects some old emails and gives them today's date. I switched to the Outlook app, and it works great.
It was great until they took a simple interface and goofed it up. In what world do I want to NOT see all three of my email accounts summary, without viewing all emails at once? This update is not right for me. If they don't provide a means to go vack to listing the account summary I will have to switch to another email program or install the old version and stop automatic app updates. I've been using this for over 10 years. It was good enough to pay for - not any more.
Used to be an amazing open source email application with good multiple account support, but the new UI is atrocious. Bring back the accounts overview screen, and at least the option to use each account's assigned color within it's folders for easy identification of which account you're looking at. Also, please remove the gaudy sidebar and just go back to accessing the menus from the bottom of the message list. Yes it was "clutter" on the screen, but it was highly useful clutter.
Oh this is painful. Best email app out there for many years. New design made it bad for multiple accounts and one-handed use. Turned off unified view because it's not practical for keeping work email and personal email separate. But with the multiple account overview gone now, It's too many steps now too see if there are any new messages in any of the accounts. Plus, there's no indication to tell which inbox I'm looking at when the app opens. For now I'm hanging on, hoping.
Guys, what happened? This was a great email app, perhaps the best. This new interface appears to be a generic object implemented to make your devs life easier. Anyway, I can not get it to update emails anymore. What can we do to return to the previous version with speed and stability? I hate to move on. By the way, your previous versions was always a 5 atar application. John
Not a fan of the new UI. Much preferred the overview screen. And the 'check box' feature being tossed also seems like a step back. Hey, maybe overall this is for the best and more people will prefer it, but it's not for me. I've been using K9 for I don't even know how long, it's easily been at least 5 years, but now I'll be looking for a diff app. I just can't see where it offers net advantages over the clients that usually come stock with a phone or tablet. I think that it did, up till now.
Having used K-9 mail since 2008, I wouldn't trade it. Easy to use after you get the hang of things, and simply works. It's hands-down the most customizable email app I've tried. I wish there were more logging options when your authentication fails (I am troubleshooting an issue with an AOL account not working, despite knowing the correct credentials) but outside of that, no complaints.
New update makes everything much harder. I have 3 email accounts, but have to drill into menu now, one at a time, to see them. Starring an email doesn't make it easier to find anymore, no obvious way to filter for starred emails. The 'next' and 'previous' email buttons are tiny and now harder to reach when holding phone in one hand. Trying to 'mark all as read' is much harder than before too. All in all, I need to find a new email app now. K9 used to be great.
5-stars for previous UI. I've used K9 mail for years. Like many other reviews the app was terrific for multiple accounts. But that changed with the latest update. A small change also made going through email much harder for the user: the delete and archive buttons are now at the top instead of the bottom when reading email. Now takes 2 hands to go through email instead of one. Thanks for all of the hard work on K9 mail. We love it. Please consider changing some of the UI features.
A week ago would have been 5 stars. I LOVE K-9 MAIL. Have used it from my first cell. But the programmer(s) have made the same mistake I've seen in lots of apps. They seem to honor pretty over function and worse they break what doesn't need fixing. Please bring back ability to not have a unified mailbox. I have no need for it and much prefer the old lists of accts as an opening screen. At the very least, give us the option as opposed to cramming what we don't want down our throats.
Used this app for years. Now, though, I get constant notices saying that k-9 mail is over-using the battery. Most recently it used 8% of the charge in less than a half hour. So I am constantly having to restart my phone. But then it happens again an hour later. I'm here at the playstore to find another email app so I can delete K-9 Mail. Samsung S8+.

Customizable, schedulable, sane, private. Handles multiple accounts, makes it easy to switch between accounts, has a unified Inbox to display all messages together, doesn't advertise to me, and displays all messages perfectly. It's just an email client, and a very good one. I didn't start using it until the Thunderbird folks took it over, and I wish I had tried it sooner.
Not sure what happened, but the new version stops working periodically and completely drains the phone battery. It used to be a reliable app, but it has terrible problems now. I have a newer phone and can go for days without charging. Now I maybe get a half day. The phone told me this app was using all my resources and recommended that I close it.
I have 6 email accounts that I must monitor constantly. Previously, I could see how many unread emails were in each account as soon as the app opened. Now I must open each account just to see if unread mail is pending. Twelve "mouse clicks" and a lot of wasted time to get the same information that was instantly available in the old version with no effort at all. Unified inbox is a poor substitute. For me, email is a tool, not entertainment. You've ruined what was a good email client. Goodbye.
Great email app, has lots of features, and is easy to use. I like the feature to display up to 6 preview lines without opening the message. K-9 Mail should honor your privacy since it's open source, so it shouldn't scan your emails and sell your data as is done by other "free" email apps (which don't inform you of this). I've recently tried/researched many email apps and K-9 Mail is the best.
No one asked for a full redesign. I use this for 4+ accounts. I want it to default to the accounts list as it always has. I can't even tell which inbox Im in when it starts up now. And it now requires 3 taps to get to the inbox of another account. This is GARBAGE. Did anyone actually try using this redesign before forcing it on us? Give us an option to go back to how it was!!!!
