I bought a book on kobo and unfortunately haven't figured out how to read it on other E-reader apps. nobody just doesn't operate smoothly. sometimes you leave the app for 30 minutes and you have to force quit the app for it to work again. not everytime but often enough for it to be annoying. app could use some work
50% of the time I attempt to open the app it just doesnt. appears on my open app list and I have to force close it and try again. it also doesnt remember you agreed to the privacy policy and have to do that everything you visit the main page. selecting wishlist also brings you to the home page and the privacy agreement the first time you click it too. sales are not clearly shown all the time, it just appears as a price causing me to try and remember what normal prices are for my tbr.
Used to be a great app. Since the last update though, it's very hard to use. The links for footnotes no longer appear to work. When you open a book, it automatically turns the screen brightness up to maximum, which makes it almost impossible to look at because it's so bright. You can't turn the brightness down either because it somehow overrides the phone settings. None of the settings seem to allow you to change any of this and re-installing it didn't do anything.
Fine... but has a lot of issues... there is no app launch animation. It looks clunky and just appears on screen after a few seconds when opening the app. When switching apps while reading, it changes pages and I lose my place. Syncing doesn't always work. I keep getting sent back to the first page of a book I'm 30% through and losing my place. Needs to be improved. I have tried reinstalling and clearing cache etc. Problems have not gone away. Almost feels easier to just carry my Clara with me.
0 stars if I could. If the app is active in the background for a couple minutes, it'll just stop working when you go back to it. My book won't load the chapters or pages anymore except the one I left on and when I force it go to a chapter to maybe fix it, it just restarts the whole app over and over. When I switch between the app and another one, Kobo will just flash the screen black or white. It's a terrible experience reading on this thing.
The app refuses to open offline and displays an error message telling the user to connect to a network if they try to do so. I discovered this the hard way at the start of a 5-hour flight where I had hoped to be able to listen to audiobooks I purchased through Kobo. I really don't understand why the app shouldn't be able to at least open in an offline mode for users to read or listen to items they've already purchased and downloaded, when other comparable media apps offer this function.
The subscription is lower than Kindle, but Amazon does have lock on many titles. But I'm happy to support authors through this retailer rather than Amz. The prices are the same or better, the in app reading experience is great. I like the organizational/search tools for My Library: much more comprehensive than Amz. I love that I can actually use a shopping cart to check out, rather than "one click". One gripe: app loads extremely slow on opening.
Could be better. Sometimes just opens to a black screen. the page numbers shift and change and the page number at the bottom of the page does not match the page number on the scroll bar. There seems to be little reason to set a bookmark as there appears to be no way to find and go to the bookmark, other than just flipping through the pages and it's often on a different page than where you placed it originally, so I always highlight the text I'm on, too. other than these issues I like it.
Quality off books is awesome. There's every genre, practically every author, both written and/ or audio book. The only suggestion I can make is there should be an option to keep a book in your library that you've already read and/or paid for, but remove the download from your device's internal memory. You should be able to download it again and again if you wanted to. Especially books you paid for. This way, the books don't take up so much space on devices.
I subscribed to this service in hopes of it being a replacement for Everand. It isn't. The app is clunky for starters and their library of "free" material as part of your subscription is relatively small. The vast majority of books I've searched on here require payment in addition to the subscription. Full disclosure, I've read the app is optimized for a Kobo device which I do not have nor will be getting. Def going back to Everand.
It's an okay app for reading. 3 specific critiques: 1 When you return to a document, after any length of time, the position is always off. 2 When you return to a document, it always lags in displaying the text. It's a short lag when you return quickly, but sometimes when you have been away for awhile, it seems to lock up the display completely. 3 The app insists on sitting on top of the phone controls [the three bars, circle and back arrow] on the bottom of the screen, & the notifications
I love the kobo service, and really enjoy my kobo device. The phone app, however, leaves much to be desired. My biggest issue is that it sometimes overwrites my phone's brightness settings. Even on dark mode, it is way too bright, and it takes a moment for the brightness to go back to normal when I close out, blinding me. It's also inconsistent. It wasn't happening for awhile, but started again when I updated the app. Lately it's also losing my place in a book on occasion.
*I did that yesterday and now it's back to doing the same thing. I was just in the middle of re listening to one of my books and it crashed and skipped to the end of the book. Not very impressed... Every time I listen to my audiobooks after the initial listen, it never holds the audio in the right spot. It'll jump way back or way ahead. It also will just crash randomly after listening for a while and won't restart in the last spot you were at. It's also a pain to be able to buy the audiobooks.
The selection is good (I like cozy mysteries) but the app is lacking. Filtering features don't work well at all - I'll go search for the next audiobook in the series, filter to try and find quicker, it won't display. Then I go to the series page and it's all of a sudden available. Very annoying and wasteful. No bookmark/clip option, and the app will randomly stop/freeze, close, and restart you back at page 1. Super frustrating. It'd be nice to filter out AI read as well.
The book store side works great, however the reading side could use some work. it is impossible to get out of a book you are reading to look at something else in this or any other app other than my phone's too drag down bar. The reader will not let my bottom buttons to the top for a quick switch to another app or backing up in the kobo app.
App cannot start if you are not connected to the internet, which defeats the whole point of having offline book files. I have received tech support and it basically boiled down to "uninstall, reinstall, and sign out and in until it works." This did work eventually, but I can't reasonably uninstall and reinstall the app every month or so as this is a recurring problem.
I love my Kobo ereader, but this app doesn't let me log in at all, so that makes it kind of useless. When I click the log in button, it immediately goes to a screen that says "Something went wrong." This is all I can get it to do. This has happened across multiple networks, so I know the issue isn't on my end.
so buggy. 2026: the app won't open unless connected to the Internet, even though I have downloaded books. app crashes if I try to switch to a different app. when I try to open a downloaded book I just get a blank screen. other bugs: highlights sometimes won't show the color past paragraph breaks. deleted highlights will still be there.
It's mostly good. I use it when I don't feel like carrying my ereader to work. It's also better to write annotations in than the ereader since its faster. The only downside is that if you minimize it too long, it just turns the screen black. To fix it, you have to reopen it.
it's a struggle to get app to open up.... every day! keeps stopping, closing on it's on. I got rid of kobo+ because it's so difficult to get into to read the dam books. so very disappointed in this app. at beginning it was great then it wasn't. in response: I did all those... repeatedly. still have the same dam problems.
