I usually use this app on my TV instead of my phone. The ads are annoying because we switched to streaming to get away from commercials which is what they are regardless of what you call them now. My biggest complaint is the shared continue watching list. No other streaming service that I have has that feature. It makes it difficult when two profiles are trying to watch the same show and I don't want to scroll through other people's shows and movies to find what I was watching.
I remember when HBO would list several great shows/movies and brand new ones as well. Now when I log in, I can barely find anything worth watching. And when I do, the ads, man😒. Sitting there like, "huh, it just came back onnn!" & realized there are ad blocks ever 5mins! They're commercials at that. 3 ads each with the majority of them being a minute long. I absolutely despise this app. At this point, I only have it because it's a $10 bundle with Netflix. Glad I've multiple streaming platforms
Having the same problem as in other reviews, where the app keeps crashing, the screen goes black, the audio goes in and out, and it buffers constantly. Maybe consider fixing the app when enough people are having the same issues instead of leaving "troubleshooting tips" under each review and just blaming it on the consumer? The app has always had some kind of problem as long as I've used it.
Great collection of movies and shows. Like all current streaming services they show ads on the less expensive subscriptions. I use Chromecast from my phone. I just had an ad when I was watching my new favorite show, The Pitt. After the ad break, the stream went back to after the last ad break. I went back to the part of the episode where I left off and got another ad. it was very frustrating and I don't have this issue with other apps.
started out ok, but the ads are obnoxious in their placement. In the middle of a very tense scene in Six Feet Under it just randomly goes to an ad. it also lies and says it's only 2 ads, then I get 3. It keeps getting worse and worse too. When I started my sub, it was like one ad here and there and now it seems like it's all the time. Beyond annoying and I'm reconsidering my subscription.
please fix the issue where when there's an ad that gives you a choice between 3 commercials. it plays the commerical and then freezes, forcing me to close the ad or wait for it to unfreeze and then backing out of my show and having to watch the ad again. I've tried clicking on all 3 ads, I've tried not clicking on it and it'll play one anyways and freeze. fix this issue and I'll change my review to 5 stars.
Fix your app! We all pay for this "streaming" service and don't see any results. The app crashes constantly, it's taken me three days to watch one episode and I still haven't finished it. The "helpful tips" are all a joke and do not work. From reading other reviews no one seems to be getting any results aside from dumb AI responding saying to go to the troubleshooting page, which by the way does not work!
App is exhaustively unstable. It constantly either gets stuck in an infinite loading screen or crashes soon after. Even if you get to playing anything, it will often crash within a minute or two. I've seen the fixes suggested to me, some of them do work but only for that particular instance, and the efficacy of the “solutions” are not consistent. It happens again and again, each time I start the app. These aren't solutions, they're band-aids. The app needs fixing.
Constantly crashes. Won't even load to the home page, just crashes on opening. Update is definitely needed. I tried all those already. doesn't work. . . update: after several chats with their technical team the app will work for a brief period if I clear the cache and data. I just have to do that every time I want to use the app. Think it's time to drop hbo.
This app hasn't worked for me for nearly all of 2025. I can log in and view titles, but when I try to click play on literally anything, an error is displayed. I've uninstalled the app, reinstalled, cleared cache, all of the things. When I called tech support they said it was a known issue and it was being worked on. That was months ago. Absolutely ridiculous that they have not fixed it after all this time.
App sucks!!! tried watching a TV show on my phone so I wouldn't have to turn on my computer or use my tablet. I was able to watch 1 episode and a few minutes if the next episode before it crapped out on me. only way I could watch was reinstalling the app. still it crashed. content on the app is good. but the app itself sucks!!! if give it 0 stars if I could.
The phone app isn't so bad but the TV app is horrible. It can't rewind or fast forward appropriately. I end up having to rewatch all these commercials which is crazy considering I already have ads for a paid service. I'm not really sure how the main function of a streaming service doesn't work appropriately. Also, now it's randomly skipping backwards to another point in the episode even when I didn't rewind.
This is by far the worst streaming app by user experience. The damn thing's lacking basic functionality, it keeps scrambling viewing orders. I missed episodes of my shows because the app decided to skip a beat. Can't turn my phone around as the screen won't flip. Basic functionality as double tap to skip ahead or back is missing from the app. It is a bad experience across all the other platforms, too. The LG WebOS app also has many shortcomings. But I'm out of letters. I could go on.
Imagine selling a subscription plan WITH ADS. And that's just one of the many, many problems with this stupid app: 1. The loading symbol shows up during episodes and movies. It happens quite often and it's very noticeable, but I've never had this issue with other streaming services ever. 2. Your downloaded episodes expire after 48h if you begin watching. What the hell? 3. You get unskippable ads on TV when casting, even with a premium account And the subtitles take a while to kick in too.
Absolute Rubbish. Every time I click to watch anything, I get a black screen with a white circle and audio, not even a moving one that means it's loading. It completely freezes my phone. I can't exit out, I can't use the power button to turn off the screen or turn off the phone, nothing. It messes up my phone so badly that it activates the safety protocols and the phone shuts itself down. UPDATE 2 years later, still the same problem.
I'm not sure why it always takes forever for this to load, I don't think it's an internet issue because this doesn't happen with any other streaming service, but it's quite frustrating. It takes about 10 minutes to start watching something on Max, and that's IF it loads at all. Not even the home screen loads correctly. Pretty disappointing.
Continues to "stream" after I have told my chromecast to stop. I have watched 1 episode of the Wire, but stupid Max thinks I'm on S2 E5! And I cannot "reset" it back to the first episode so that the "continue watching" feature is accurate. This has happened with other series and it's incredibly frustrating. Combined with the poor mobile interface where I can't hit buttons on the last episode of a series because the chromecast status bar blocks it, I hate the HBO Max Mobile app.
There's nothing wrong with the content, but I really hate the app. Whenever I close it to switch to another app or something, and then try to resume whatever I'm watching, I get a blank screen. I then have to close the app entirely, open it, and then go find the show to continue watching it. Lots of unnecessary steps that none of the other streaming platforms make me go through.
Good luck being able to use the app if your subscription is linked to your cable provider. It's a literal neverending loop of being taken back to the login page after logging in, every single time. This has been a known problem for years and they have not dealt with it - just kicking the can.
Easily one of the best streaming apps and not just because I like HBO shows the most. The main gripe I have is that you have to pay extra for an ad-free subscription, but the amount of ads aren't too distracting and sometimes I don't even get any ads at all. I've been using this app for a long time and haven't had problems with buffering or bad quality like I do with other services. Overall I'm pretty happy with this app and don't have the constant irritation that I do with Disney+ and Hulu.
