As an organizer this app is just worth having. It's expensive, but does make listing Meetup easy. It sucks at notifying you about messages. I just got one from a year ago. I have all notifications set to on, it just doesn't send them. Probably pointless responding years later. They keep jacking up the price but honestly have not seen any improvements on basic services much less the more expensive premium services. I constantly debate keeping or stopping.
I've been an organizer with meetup 17 years and it has gone downhill ovee.the last 7 years or so. The price to organize a group has gone up but with nothing important to offer to justify the extreme cost increase. And now you can pay as a user to get a more enhanced experience? I think not. I wouldn't waste anymore money on this app, especially since there are other, comparable apps out there now that cost way less to operate and are more fun to use.
Extremely slow, & buggy at times. For being mostly a text based app with few graphics, Meetup is annoyingly slow. Group pages & events take too long to load even when connected to strong wifi. Sometimes events dated for 2 days way say "happening tomorrow". In the past year, it started adding annoying pop up ads after you RSVP to an event, as well as popups to rate previously attended events. I've not found a way to turn off any of these options. Overall it seems updates don't make improvements
While I'm a fan of Meetup, the app is terrible. The website is only slightly better. The search is very poor, making it really hard to find anything. I happened to come across an interesting group, but when I tried to find it again, nothing worked. Finally used Google and eventually got back to it through the website. In the app there does not seem to be any way to browse groups, just events. Wish there was a way to save something I see to consider later after browsing.
The content is great, but the app can be incredibly frustrating. The filters can be buggy. Sometimes, I'll try to apply a filter, only for the app to apply a different filter that I didn't want. My biggest annoyance is that I can't just sort events by the time the events start. They have general times of day you can select, but that's entirely insufficient. Just let me order events by what time they start!
Decent app for meeting people, as described, but a few annoying features to deal with: There's no way to block or remove recommendations from certain groups. I'm a guy in my 20s, and I keep getting recommendations for "Board games with the girlies" or "senior brunch meetup". I want to meet people in real life, and it always include online meetups in searches, and recommendations. You can filter out these events, but it resets every time, so every time you open the app you need to do it again
I travel for work. The app does not accomidate this at all. Even with my location set I can not see events near my hometown in the app without spoofing my phones location. The website would be near perfect if it didn't try to get me to use the app to view events, which never works and just drops me into the app home page. I can not recommend the app when it doesn't seem to have any advantage over a web browser.
I have been using Meetup for over a decade now. There are a ton of meetup groups where I live and it has definitely brought a huge improvement to my social life. Overall, I love meetup and I think the overall structure is fine. However, I seriously hate the software. It sucks and they constantly change the app for no good reason. As an organizer, it's worse because I have to use a different app(which also sucks) to schedule events. It's Very frustrating.
An absolutely terrible idea and app. Any event that I've tried to go to has been: unorganized, unwelcoming, not communicated well with details, and/or etc. Furthermore, you can't even see who's going to an event and their age. This is only available if you pay for Meet Up. That's incredibly dumb. Why are users, who are trying to find social events (which is very hard as it is these days) forced to pay to see basic info? Go ahead and charge the event organizers and stuff like that.
I have been a member for years. In the past 2 weeks, all but one of the groups I am in have left meetup due to rising fees. I am not willing to pay $5 a month to see the members of groups I have been welcomed into and which of them have rsvp'd yes to an event. This app has gotten worse not better. As mentioned by another user, they have not been willing to correct an error that enables people to deactivate. Good error if you want to inflate how many people use your app.
Good app to explore interests. However, as of 9.25.25 they have something like 5 different types of membership that do the same thing and they even allow/encourage you to sign up for all of the different types of memberships simultaneously. This feels a bit like a scam. I reached out to customer service, but that seems to be very poor. They only have email and FAQs and don't even understand your request very well. And for note, I've been using the app for over 10+ years.
I am located in a populated metro area. I cannot seem to find the types of meetups that I want to find in my area. I find the user interface of the app frustrating. I am bombarded by meetup+ prompts. This concept has so much potential, but it isn't being utilized. People are feeling isolated and would be eager to make new social connections. The app has few viable alternatives. There's ample space for this concept - I wouldn't be surprised if competitors popped up soon.
ERG! I can't find push notification settings beyond turning them all on or off and I'm getting way too many multiple times a day! Great service for meeting people and engaging in activities that support my goals and interests. It takes time to modify the notifications for each group you sign up for and I'm glad you can opt out gettin email notifications. I wish I could also have the option to globally effect all my meetup group notifications in lieu of each one individually. Great app!
I had a terrible experience with this app and I didn't even get an opportunity to login yet. I set up my account and was supposed to receive an email verification which is needed to log in. I checked my inbox and spam and never received it. I went to the help section of the app where I could post my problem, but it kept glitching several times and I could not complete my trouble ticket/request. This app is needed for a course that I'm taking which is now pointless because I can't even log in!
Extremely high fees to manage a group, that keep increasing. After closing the group I managed I was still charged a subscription fee. Will not let me remove my credit card info because it says I have an active subscription. I've canceled my subscription as far as I can tell. who knows though because there are no fewer than 4 different ways they could charge you. It's like trying to cancel a gym membership. Used to be a pretty great place but it's been enpoopified.
Mobile site is already bad with the number of pop-ups, but the app is even more intrusive with how hard it pushes the paid plans. First-time user setup is intentionally deceptive, making it seem like you have to subscribe/sign up for a free trial to proceed (when you can actually just back out). Uninstalled after about 60 seconds and am inclined to stop using the site altogether.
The app used to work well. But they never updated their messaging system to be on par with other messaging apps. Notifications might get sent, but then the message isn't real-time. Or messages may never get sent, or get copied too many times. Connections could be a great way to filter people out and white list them, but I don't think the developers are thinking of that. Website is also buggy, and errors pop up all the time.
It's a great app and I love the ability to meet new people with similar interests. I'm giving it a one star to draw attention to a problem I've been having: when joining a new group, I am unable to press the 'Continue' button after answering the questions that some groups request before joining. I am unable to join any group that has qualification questions (on the Android app).
This app is now just a backup for me for finding events to attend. The UI hasn't ever been great. But it didn't need to be. Now paywalling key features? I don't get enough value from Meetup to pay for it. Now, every time I open the app, I get closer to just deleting my account. Good job! Additionally, I can't even navigate the desktop site without getting stuck at a pop-up that won't let me leave without subscribing or closing the window completely. But supply and demand. Hope there's demand.
Maybe it's just me but from all 3 phones I've used so far. The app is garbage when it comes to "photo upload". The hit or miss is so frustrating. Once the first few pictures are uploaded, that's it...the trouble continues again with the next few pictures. A whole bunch of refresh and you can tell the number of photos shown that is already uploaded fluctuate every time. The only sure way for me has been to always transfer the photos to my laptop then upload them that way or else...headache.
