This app has potential. My biggest things are having to pay to have the grammatically explained to you. Limiting those explanations make it harder to fully grasp language learning. Also, the lessons move way too fast. When answering a question, you can't just reflect on it for a second, because it almost immediately goes to the next question. Navigating through the app is overwhelming and showing lessons that free users cannot access is just distracting. Learning common phrases does help.
Used a few hours and am impressed compared to similar aps. I didn't know I could select more than 1 word list, so I wound up doing semi-advanced conversations for moving abroad, which is a bit too difficult currently (yet still had fun). I tried going backward in lessons but couldn't, so I deleted all progress and am starting anew. Lessons have no tags/labels, so navigation is a bit convoluted. Will have to see what else is on here and re-review.
I have been learning Spanish (mexico) for about a week. I think this app is very helpful, and the native speakers are very helpful. One thing though is that the AI sentence builder, is not helpful. It asks you to create or add to sentences with words you haven't learned yet. Overall the app is good. I also wish it would teach grammar. Learning Spanish as an English speaker is hard because sentences are ordered differently, and they don't explain that.
I am a university Chinese teacher. This app may be good for other languages but it has a long way to go for Chinese. I was checking to see if I could use it in class but unfortunately many of the translations are incorrect. one example is 自助 which they teach as meaning 'buffet'. This is not true. the word for buffet includes that word but it is not buffet by itself. Unfortunately there is a 500 character limit for reviews. Use something else if learning Mandarin until they fix their issues.
I really love the lessons and platform, but geez the app is buggy. It fails to connect a lot giving me a"retry" or "You might be offline" error when I'm on wifi or both data and wifi. It does this a lot when you try to access your stats, too. At this very moment, it won't even boot up and I've tried restarting my phone and uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. i really wish they'd fix it so it is more reliable.
2015: it is legitimately fun to learn with memrise, i'm not even kidding i can now learn german and japanese when i can't sleep at night or during pauses in the day. also it's fairly easy so that's always a plus. so if ur thinking about it... just try it out bc youll probably be glad you did :D 2026- They removed ASL from the main app. Very stupid. Those courses are the only thing that has kept me coming back: what they call the 'community courses' are some of the coolest ones. They're removed.
I do like having videos of native speakers speaking. This app is primarily about developing your listening skills. There is no feedback on your speaking skills. Also, the Chinese lessons are almost entirely done with Pinyin, not the actual Chinese characters, so though you may learn to read and type a language that uses a Latin alphabet, you won't be learning to read or write Chinese. only listen.
Paid for the life time membership and trying to learn, but each lesson is the exact same 5 words. I uninstalled the app. I deleted the course to start over. I have tried different languages. Now, the same lesson repeats but without even pronouncing the terms or phrases so its literally just the same 5 flash cards over and over... I have submitted multiple help tickets without a response...What a waste of money :(
I used to love this app, but now it doesnt even work anymore. When opening the app, it sits on the "Memrise" screen, occasionally going into the app only for it to be completely blank. My wifi is fine, data is fine and the app is up to date. I am unsubscribing from the pro membership and deleting now even though I dont want to. Sadly, no use in keeping something that doesnt work.
There is native speakers inside the app (pre-recorded) that help you catch the language quickly. You are unable to move on to the next word or phrase until you really do understand it, and they break it down from listening, to reading, and actually writing it out yourself. From somebody coming from rosetta stone it is kind of refreshing to have this kind of approach to learning a new language. Good luck. Don't be too hard on yourself and learn that language!
As a long-time user of the app, the neglect of the community courses always caused me issues and stopped me paying for memrise. They were hard to find and reset. I came back to the app, hoping they'd fixed the issues, only to find out they'd decided to become useless instead. Access to the fantastic community created courses has been stopped completely.
I love this app! It teaches me words and phrases that aren't commonly taught while still teaching common words. It's super easy to interact with and the lessons are a lot of fun with variations. I also like that I can switch languages and learn more than one. I just can't stand how the app is down almost every day and I don't get to use it most days anymore. If it didn't crash so much I would probably spend my money on the upgrade. I just don't want to spend money on something that's broken.
Better than other options, but they still change the program every 6 months or so and dump all progress. I'm not fast, just leave it alone. also, again to say it is far better than any other I've touched, but I can barely spell in English. there is no reason to circle through the same work I've misspelled 10 time already in one lesson to force me to somehow figure it out. leave it and let me come back.
i miss the previous version of Memrise. i loved the silly comedic skit videos. that was one of the best parts! the reviews were better in the pre-membot version. i don't like the new Memrise at all
Good app overall, with videos of native speakers, and vocabulary exercises. One downside is the inability to give feedback in-app when things don't look right with an exercise, like an exercise not accepting a valid synonym, or a spelling variation in a transliteration. Also, being unable to skip whole lessons in a course is a drawback. If you start a course at a lower level than is best for you, then there is no way to fix this.
I'm having to change from 5 stars to 2 stars because, as someone said with learning Mandarin, the same thing is happening on the Japanese course with the Kanji. As it introduces a new Kanji, instead of having its translation in English at the bottom like it used to, it just has the same Kanji character which is completely useless an unhelpful. Please fix this! You have been my favorite language learning app and I'd like to still be able to use Memrise.
I love this app! I'm learning Norwegian and im almost on level 2 or "Norwegian 2" its called. I've been learning Norwegian fooooor a few months? Memrise is fun and easy to use. Some things require pay, but you don't have to. I'm learning Norwegian perfectly fine without paying. I definitely recommend this app to anyone who is interested in learning a new language. They start off with the basics. Like, communication. Saying sorry and such things similar to that. Enjoy and practice! Work hard!!!!!!
I use this app every day. First I paid for 1 year, but the lifetime membership is a much better deal. My favorite part is that they have videos of actual people saying the phrases. I also like the listening exercises. One improvement they could make: As you're reviewing a phrase in your target language, they don't always give you the English translation. As a result, sometimes I'm reviewing phrases, but I have absolutely no idea what they mean. I love this app! It's super!!
When I downloaded this app at the beginning of the year, it was phenomenal! I felt like I had finally found the hidden gem of language learning software. It updated automatically in February to a new and illogical version. They've intentionally removed all of the community generated languages from the app, so all my progress was lost. They did not notify me of any upcoming changes at all. Just decided to render hundreds and thousands of learners 'expelled,' so to speak, from the app.
I've enjoyed using this app for about a year. I use it in tandem with other learning apps. However, the most recent update has messed with my daily streaks and made them go away. Even after I complete my at quota for the day and it says that my daily goal has been met, it's all gone the next day. 300+ days gone away. I know it's a little thing but it's a little frustrating when you had made a goal and the way you were tracking it messes up.
