I had a frustrating experience with both customer service and the pricing structure. Being required to pay for a longer subscription than you actually need feels unfair, especially when you only need access for about three months. Many students rely on this platform for ebooks because buying physical copies is often more expensive, so forcing extended commitments can create unnecessary financial strain.
So far a clean and simple app with no real drawback. I like that the audiobook works when my phone is turned off. If I'm not wrong, you can use all the same features as its website counterpart, which I'm grateful for! I haven't seen any ads in between page flips or button presses, which already takes my vote. I paid for my book, I get to read with no gunk in between. Perfect!
Pick your poison, I guess. Either use a web browser and be able to highlight numbers and bolded text (which the mobile app can't do), or use the mobile app and have easy access on the go. Do NOT, for any reason, try to go back and forth between both. Highlighting something in the mobile app will cause the internet client to freak out and highlight everything in the entire section, delete your existing highlights, and sometimes make text on the page unreadable. I would not recommend it.
The audio feature is a frustrating experience on the phone. Very hard to skip around to listen to specific content unless you know the timecode. It's easy to skip to a new section but, if you stop listening in the middle of a section, you have to start all over or hunt for where it left off. And the AI voice is rudimentary when compared to other voice services.
I do not understand why there is not a way to complete Mastering/My lab homework through this app. Online, you can access the etext and homework, easily switching between the two. Why doesn't Pearson "Plus" include anything besides textbook material in various forms? Also, the audiobook feature is awful--literally unusable for any math or science classes. The flat, unengaging robot voice can't read numbers, formulas, symbols, or equations correctly.
The audiobook is robotic so it makes no sense. You can slow it down, but the pronunciation and timing is all off. So it's not useful to get school reading in when driving, exercising, cooking etc. Unable to zoom in on photos, diagrams I need to memorize are too small to read. The audiobook usually doesn't work unless I Force Stop in the app.
The app is fine and helps. But if you aren't able to log in and try to request a reset link, you'll never get one. I have been trying for over a week, requested a password reset link multiple times, and nothing ever comes. I finished my class and need to cancel my subscription. Chat support was worthless and kept passing me to someone else. I will have to try to block the charges from my bank. Will never use this app again.
This app could be amazing if it wasnt so glitchy. Either make this app work or let us read the books we bought in an app that does. My big issues: It usually won't let you highlight more than a word at a time. Sometimes it freaks out and will not dictate a huge portion of text... It skips to the end of the chapter or brings you back to the beginning. Sometimes it randomly scrolls sideways instead of down, which makes the dictation start the chapter over. I'd add more but I'm out of room.
Audio function won't work until I reinstall...again. Half the time I open it the audio part of my book just doesn't play. The only thing that fixes it is reinstalling. My most expensive textbook by far. This is not cool at all. Pearson, use the tons of money we give you to hire enough people to keep the app functioning, because it seems like you're not fixing it because you don't feel you have to. It's shameful. Also, the audio should have the text follow along and it doesn't do that either.
Nice to have flash cards for study on the go, but the audio play feature on the app just isn't there. On Android at least. There's no option to do so even though the app says it's possible. Would be 5* otherwise, have had no other issues, so far. But my main reason for getting this app was to have audio in the car while driving. Can't even get the audio to work on their mobile website (normal on desktop is fine, which is how I know the audio is possible)
Be careful of which subscription you choose! I believed that with the 4 mo subscription you could use a book until you were done then exchange it for a different book. You can't! If you finish the course anytime between 14-99 days you're stuck paying for the book you no longer need for the rest of the time. I finished my 1st course in 3 weeks and had no option to get a book for my next course other than paying for another subscription. I called customer service and got no help.
Bulky and cumbersome. You can't zoom in and out of a textbook which makes using it in picture-in-picture mode near impossible. You also cant disable page turning by swiping horizontal. I am constantly trying to read a table and accidentally swiping to a different page. I just want a pdf of the textbook. I've never had any issues with that. This app over complicates things and makes it so cumbersome to use the text.
Works alright, however it doesn't return to the last page I was at, nor the correct area, so I have to scroll a bunch to get to where I want. Interactive images and text is broken and unviewable sometimes, at least with MyLab BRADY eText. Works great on PC but this app could still use some work. At the very least, I can read the text on my phone like I wanted, albeit missing key stuff but it does it's job.
*update September 2024 page number still wrong AND the highlight visibility feature in the app does not work (yes it's turned on). I can highlight text, but it isn't visible in the app (only on desktop). The page number feature does not advance when you go to the next page. This makes citing the correct page number very tedious. Bookmarks do not work and if you "search" for a term, it only works some of the time. I've updated, uninstalled and reinstalled, to no avail.
So frustrating that there are no audiobook controls while reading the text. I like to watch it highlight as the audiobook reads but am unable to pause or watch how far I fast forward or rewind in the text because I have to go to another screen to reach audiobook controls, I can't see the text at the same time, I have no idea how far to rewind or fast forward. After digging I did find where I could add to my menu to "read from here" but this is not a user friendly app at all.
You have to re-open the book you're reading every time you leave the app, and just hope it remembers what page you were on, because it often will not. Attempting to look at key terms continuously crashes the app instead of bringing you to the term definition -- and the app doesn't remember the page you were looking at that contained the key term, so you have to manually navigate back to the page and try again, only to inevitably repeat this cycle over and over again without success.
I love using this to study for my college classes. They have everything you could need! You are looking for something specific in your textbook and don't want to skim the whole book trying to find it? Use the search bar! You want to study using flash cards and don't want to write out everything yourself? They already have flash cards! Do you not understand the chapter you're reading? They have lecture videos in every shapter! It's a little pricey for 10$ a month, but it's definitely worth it.
Audio feature crashes. The only way I have found to remedy the problem is to uninstall and reinstall the app. Clearing the cache does nothing, restarting my phone does nothing. This app would certainly be convenient if the audio feature worked. I thought I was going to get through a lot of my textbook during a long drive the other day, but I was disappointed the audio wouldn't work after the first time moving between chapters on my Samsung Galaxy Note 9. ☹️
The functionality of accessing the book by signing into my Pearson account in mobile Chrome is superior to this app. In the app, when done with a section you click on the plus sign, the contents button, then the next section . In the browser, you click an arrow. Both the app & the website let you change to night mode & make the text bigger, but the first section of each chapter in the app is only accessible through the outline & you can't change the font size or to night mode there.
DON'T PURCHASE FOR USE WITH AUDIO. IT IS POORLY DESIGNED. This is my second review of the audio. I tried to eliminate having to restart the app when it freezes out when after my phone's lock screen appears by postponing the lock for 10minute. I was listening, paused the audio to take a handwritten note and withing a minute, the audio froze while still on my brightly lit phone and I am again FORCED to close the app and open it all again. Why am I paying for an audio book that doesn't work!?
