Constant crashes, freezes, and disconnects since the July update. Happens regardless of network or target PC. LAN or AVD. Desktop session or remote app. Direct or through RD gateway. it's always the same: I connect to the PC/workspace and after a minute or so of normal use I get a grey screen and a spinning throbber. Often while scrolling. It's been months and still no fix in sight. Thanks Microsoft, you've made it impossible for me to work from my phone, which is actually kind of a big deal.
This app USED to be the best. Now it just hangs, and crashes CONSTANTLY. You can try every fix in the book and it still won't work. Don't even bother reaching out to them. Microsoft's generic reply is that either you app is out of date or Windows is out of date. This issue has been happening to me across three different phones, three different major android versions, two different machines, windows 10, 11, and server. The only constant is this app.
EDIT: 4 months later and it seems to have gotten even worse. Literally constant freezing and crashing. It's unusable. I don't understand how Microsoft could put out something THIS bad. Constant freezing, crashing, and forced closing on Android. Very unreliable. Looking for an alternative because this app has proven it's not out of beta with how often it freezes or crashes on me. I expect better from Microsoft.
I use the RD app on my phone and tablet to occasionally check on the 2 windows pro machines on my network. I didn't use it a lot but it was handy and IT WORKED. Windows App forced itself on my tablet last night and I couldn't get it to work AT ALL. Original connections failed, attempts to set up new ones failed. From the other ratings it looks like I'm not the only one having this issue. Also a stupid idea for an app name.
2 stars, despite as many, many, MANY reviews claim. It simply doesn't work very often. Or at all. Honestly I've gotten it up and running when first installing, and WHEN it is working properly. I actually find it to be one of the apps that allow easier, more streamlined navigation of your pc. Hints the 2 stars, instead of 1. However getting it up and running. And ESPECIALLY keeping it up and running. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. Unfortunate too, because i prefer it's navigation, over others. FIX IT!!
Pro: It works quite well. Sometimes for as much as ten minutes! Con: It crashes quite frequently. Annoyingly, a lot. I have "anonymous feedback" enabled, so Microsoft must just enjoy the constant crash reports. Alas, I've found no other RDP app to switch to, so I continue force closing with this one... At least it seems to get regular updates. Note: Dec 11 update did not appear to address any of the crashing issues.
It's fine. Still a bit clunky but largely does what the old RD client version did. Biggest issue now was a problem from before, mouse cursor color is stupid. Like REALLY guys, I need to tell you that having the same color cursor as the damn background of so many windows is a REALLY STUPID idea? Do you not use your own app? Also lack of ability to adjust window shifting when zoomed in and using the cursor. At this point you should just pay me big bucks to tell you how to design software.
Works surprisingly well. I see a lot of negative reviews on here, not sure why. My experience has been very positive. Specifying the IP address is easy, just put it in the pc name field. I didn't even bother with the wizard, anyone using this app probably doesn't need it anyway. I also like how it saves my connection info so I can remote into my hyper-v host server easily, as well as my fail over. Connection, in my environment, is about the same as the RD app. I don't like UI change but 🤷
My experience with this app is not really nice, I'll give you a few reasons: 1. Connection drops 2. Connection issues when you try to connect 3. App keeps running in the background even when I killed the app in app switcher. The problem is that whenever I used this app on my old iPhone it used to work just fine, perfect I must add. I didn't have issues on the iOS platform but since I've switched to Android this app has just been a nightmare.
The latest update has fixed a few issues; shortcuts to specific computers are back, and it no longer constantly prompts for access to Bluetooth peripherals. It still has issues though, as it doesn't properly pass my credentials for the gateway to the desktop like it does on the desktop application, so I have to log in twice. The old Remote Desktop app handled all of this better than this app. Not sure why I was forced to move to a worse app with less features.
Poor implementation. If you disconnect from the terminal server side (e.g. log off), this app hangs on a blank screen. Randomly, it'll also not reconnect and hang on "Configuring remote PC". When this happens, you need to clear cache and stored data to wipe the saved profile, re-add the server IP and settings and then it'll work again. Terrible!!!!!
Such a bland name! Try Googling Windows App and see how many irrelevant results you get. Thankfully, the massive thumbnails for each PC can now be reduced (although the app forgets this option if you back out of the app to exit). I can't see how to scan my network to retrieve computer names which you need to set up a connection. Luckily, I still have the old RD app so had to use that to grab names.
I'm not a big fan of the Display Sizes. They're really awkward sizes that can't be customized. I'd prefer being able to set the resolution or even just use the remote PC's set resolution and just scroll with the mouse arrow. Feature suggestion: The capability to change screens/monitors rather than moving everything that's open to the main one.
You'll mostly just be repeatedly deleting the cache and retrying the connection, which usually just freezes at the login screen. If you're very lucky, and you keep stopping the app + deleting the cache + trying again, you'll get a connection. It's now your mission to get everything done in 200 seconds before the app crashes/freezes again, and you have to repeat the process. Is this actually from Microsoft? Do they have an intern who hates Android maintaining this app?
Broken One-Handed UX: The app is unusable one-handed because the connection bar - the only way to toggle the keyboard - is locked to the top of the screen and cannot be moved to the bottom for thumb access. Requiring a three-finger gesture just to open the keyboard is a major design flaw. Allowing the toolbar to dock at the bottom is a trivial fix that would immediately solve this accessibility issue.
Using this app on the my Unihertz Titan 2. The app can't seem to handle the high resolution or the square display I have the display set to 1440 by 1440 but the remote window displays 720 by 720 regardless. The physical keyboard isn't registering correctly. The Alt key doesn't do a thing. The remote window crashes regularly. About every 3 minutes. 3 months later, app continues to function poorly.
About as simple as it gets. I was able to connect and manage my VPS in less than 5 minutes. The only small snag I could see people getting into is not knowing the IP and port of the machine you are trying to remote into goes in the 'PC Name' field.
Works pretty well, though onboarding could be improved. Started by typing in my Microsoft account, then it turns out only work or school accounts are supported. At home, setting up the connection for a PC is entirely manual. The remote view fills the screen without any padding, which means the corners are cropped out on screens with rounded corners. There should be a setting for inserting some padding to ensure the image isn't cropped too much.
Works ok. Name change was top level stupid. Backgrounds that used to be a visible reminder to what you had once connected to is now gone. Sad little application now. Edit: Taking off another star as name is still "app" which does nothing to indicate its actual functionality.
The cursor is badly offset on the Pixel 10 fold. It also doesn't stretch all the way to the edges of the screen. It's barely tolerable, so I'm really hoping this gets fixed because I use it often.
