Nope! doesn't help one bit. what I've learned from ads ,is they needed an ad that was extremely repetitive and relevant so that they could scam people. everyday there's been a charge for $9.94 and I can't get ahold of a real person, nowhere did I read for anything for that price , I've tried to cancel my account and it's a job itself to do so. I don't recommend this app at all. cause there's no one to talk to when you need help, once you mention unauthorized charges the app gives you error code
It's so easy to set up, I bet a child could set it up if they had the means. It bumped up my score 27 points right off the bat for opening an account and making my first payment, I'm already back in the average range! This is extremely useful if you're like me and already went through your credit starter program at your bank but never got a credit card after. Edit: 3 to 5 stars for improving the withdrawal time, and also I love the new UI. So so SO much nicer than before! :)
I have taken 2 stars away from a 5 star review because they will overdraft your account and they don't offer the option to defer your cash advance payment until you actually get paid! otherwise, this being the first time I've used Self for a cash advance, I will say it was great! I was able to get an advance, thank you for that, but unfortunately with no option to update the payback date to when I actually get paid my account was overdrawn by them and then they won't give another advance!
SCAM I had a two year account, even paid it off a few months early so I could use the payout for holiday shopping. Credit score dropped more after closing the account than it ever raised by opening it, and it has now been three weeks with no payout. The 5-7 days payout offer does nothing. It's 5-7 days after they "process the transaction", and they take as long as they want to "process". I honestly have no idea if I'm ever going to get the money back. No answer from customer service at all.
I signed up for Self to build my credit history, but the exact opposite happened. The business model is misleading: you think you are paying into a savings account to help yourself, but they treat it like a high-stakes loan. I missed a payment—on what is technically my own money—and they immediately reported it to the credit bureaus as a delinquency. I am now paying a monthly fee for a service that has tanked my payment history. If you are looking to build credit, get a secured credit card inste
This account is not the same as a credit builder, but similar. Customer service is good, but you work mostly with the APP. I closed my account and the process of charging me didn't happen, so when I look back, it had accumulated $15 per month after closing! I was lucky that customer service waived on $15, but I had to pay over $50 in late fees! If this is the only card you are going to be using, then you might have better luck finding time to call up and fix issues.
Has improved my score. However, the consistency of your payments, processing, applying to your account is lacking. Make your payment, it processes through your bank account and sometimes it takes up to 12 days before being applied to either of your accounts. That is the longest it has taken for me on a few instances. Occasionally during that time frame, since their system hasn't updated your account it will show that either a payment was missed or card utilization is high!Thats a lie response!
It works! I signed up for the 12 month program. The program did what it was supposed to do. I saved money & raised my credit score accordingly. But, as soon as I was done & the account closed, my score dropped, which I now know is common when an account is closed, especially if the account was less than 2 years old. Not necessarily Self's fault but would I have known that, I wouldn't have signed up. Feels like I wasted a year. Sign up for 2 years and take advantage of elevated score asap.
I've been trying to cancel this credit card... I made a payment over a week ago and it's still "pending" despite being cleared from my bank for days. Getting in touch with a person is IMPOSSIBLE. I've just been blasting emails to cancel this card and about to contact credit agencies if I don't get a response from them within 24 hours. It's good for building credit to a sense. But they are incredibly predatory, don't provide comprehensive support. There are much better ways to build credit
Another very trustworthy option in building your credit score. No BS no scams. This app combined with a few others allowed me to buy my home. The credit card they offer ain't bad for raising your credit. The annual payment is once a year instead of some cards with monthly payments regardless of weather you use them or not. If this is your first credit card your paying about $3 a month for the card. you can control the credit limit though, no one can stop you! I love this app.
After just finishing my first year, I can say that Self has actually been a great tool. It boosted my score instantly thanks to the loan, and my score gradually, consistently went up every month. Now ofcourse you have to make good decisions, especially if you get the self credit card. But if you're committed to it, this tool might put you on the financial straight and narrow for good.

Scrappy “I’ll fold yo ass” Doo
Check this out. I signed up for the credit builder account. Minimum payment is $35. Cool. I made that payment. They deducted $8 for interest. My savings balance was $27. I logged in a few days later to check on things only to find my savings went from $27 to $19. There's no transaction history of where that extra $8 went to. Just gone. Ofc customer service isn't available and I can't take screenshots.
It helps build your credit score in a nice way, my only problem was not getting the SELF visa card,, I paid off what I owed in 3 months, they specifically said, " if you make 3 payments, you'll be eligible for the SELF credit card". We'll, I wasn't. Doesn't matter, I got my score up to 790, I can get almost any card I want now. But back then, when it was 690, would've been nice to have. All and all, a great app that helps a lot.
Opened an account because of reviews saying it helps increase your score over time. Set up automatic payments so every payment was paid on time. My scores never increased the entire time. Not even by 1 point. At the end of the terms I got a direct deposit with my money and about 2 weeks later my score dropped 50 points due to account closing. My credit is now lower than when I started. Would not recommend.
TOTAL SCAM!! I've had this for 5 months, got the credit card and everything. All payments made on time and I keep a low credit usage percentage, and pay my Self "loan" on time, even early every month. Yet, my credit score has decreased EVERY MONTH since signing up. There are no other factors affecting my score like this, because I haven't missed any other payments anywhere else, etc. This trend started when I signed up for this app. Stay away!!!!!
I have nothing but great things to say about this program. Not only did opening the credit builder account help establish positive payment history, but it created a seamless path to open a secured credit card without a hefty down payment! I was still able to get some of it back even after putting what I'd put towards the card. I've already had 3 automatic credit line increases. Today, my score has risen nearly 120 points, and steadily increases every month!
Awesome! So easy to start and so easy to use... after 3 payments on time u can start a secured credit card account, which uses the money u already paid as the limit on card. So therefore u have 2 new accounts open and as long as you pay them on time, you will see a dramatic change in your score in less than a year...100 pts in 5 months for me!! Try it , you will be happy you did!
I have over 5yrs of credit repair, just because you know how to fix your credit doesnt make it easy. Self if great does exactly what it is supposed to do. Yes it is very likely your credit score will drop a tad when you first open (this is a real line of credit) very normal and expected to do so. I was very weary, seemed to easy. I signed up april 2019 for a 2 year, I just paid it off about 20 minutes ago. A year ago I couldn't even get a secured credit card, I just bought a house 2 weeks ago.
They reported to the credit bureau that I was over 30 days late on my account, causing my credit score to drop 110 points! The crazy part is that I was never late on any payments. I had confirmation emails from self verifying they had received my payments. I even had my bank statements showing my monthly payments I had made to them. But they still haven't done anything to help me out. All they do is tell me they are "looking into it". Absolutely horrible experience.
Edit- Rating bombed because they changed how payments can be made. Now costs $3.50 extra and HAS to be made with a "live agent", which a bot chat. The only work around is to process through the bank with routing/account numbers which takes excessively long to process. Shame on you, Self. I will never open another account with you just because of the inconvenience. I'm updating my review to add that I've now had the account for about 6 months and my score has gone up over 60 points. It works!
