This app didn't work. Paid subscription fee & tried to use utilized the instant pay feature (5.00 fee for that) to find out it wasn't instant to your debit card or bank account and only to their account. Tried to set up bank account but it allows me to pay for subscription and not able to add bank account. Then I receive a account closure email and was only provided a link to a "list" of reasons of closure. Im trying to figure out a way to contact them to get my subscription fee refunded.
most of the positive reviews are most likely bots...I did everything it told me to do...linked my bank account and debit card...after free trial ends it's 4.99 a month just for them to say I couldn't get any advances bc my account hasn't been opened long enough and to try back in a month...and it's not my bank account they're talking about bc I've had that one for 6 years...I'm like so you want me to pay for a subscription for a whole month that I can't even use any of the features on?? foh...
I have used them since 2023. It was nice at first, being freshly 18 and having the option to build credit. Cute interface and liked the trivia. However now that they are constantly rolling out new features banking with them has been unreliable. There is always some type of glitch where you cant access money or add money, randomly lose access to features. Customer service is a joke. Find somewhere to store your money.
Nice app to allow parents to see kids balances and transactions / where the money was spent. However the kids can only have one account, so we cannot set up spending and saving accounts. Also only one payment method is free. If you would like two payment methods, like a card and a device, you have to pay the monthly fee, so it definitely has its limitations. We are searching for a new app that hopefully has these features
There's a lot to love about this app, you can build credit and gain interest on your savings. I have one big gripe that is stopping me from giving it 5 stars. the "borrow" feature used to be very useful for people living paycheck to paycheck to get extra money while also being able to reasonably pay everything back, paying in 3 installments over a long time. this new system takes all from your next check with a $5 fee for immediate use. this makes multiple "borrows" add up in cost very fast
Okay I have to update my review. The money goes into your "step" account. Then you can choose to send it to your bank/debit card free but it'll take 1-3 business days or you can do instant for (mine was $1). Not a scam! I was immediately approved for $50. No third parties or lenders or tribes. Free 7 day trial and low instant transfer fee ($5). So in total, to borrow $50 I paid $6. Still not bad.
Not a fan. I was sent a referral link that promised cash on both ends for signing up and setting up direct deposit. After two direct deposits and no credit, I combed the app multiple times trying to find out why. I'd read all the terms. No minimum was listed. However, when I reached out to customer service, they said there was a minimum, but it's too late. I don't do sketchy. There's WAY too much competition. I found no real benefit to having a Step account. Just another medicocre banking app.
Great app to start, so easy to transfer money to my kids when they needed a little extra while out and about. I don't have to drive to them or go get cash. But with the fee new structure, fees for transfers under $25 will cause me to be looking for another option. I can't always afford $25 to send each kid. Let alone, my kids won't save it. If it's there, they'll use it. Sending $5 or $10 for some small job they did is reasonable. $25 is just too much every time.
Sometimes apps are confusingly set up, but since this is made for literal children, it's all very simple and easy to use, and this 20-year-old likes that. I also like that I was able to talk to reps. in the app and get verified by alternative means (because I don't have any gov. ID), I got a virtual number that's ready to use while I wait for the physical card, and it will supposedly help build my credit. The only thing missing that would make this PERFECT is the ability to deposit checks.
Great app. My main gripe with it is the limit on what you can take out of your account at a time. Having a $3k monthly limit for withdrawing money is excruciating low, and makes it feel pointless to save for bigger things due to the restriction. I'm going to have to find a different bank because of this; it simply isn't reasonable to longterm save with Step. (Not to mention quite a few retailers don't accept Step as a payment method, so withdrawing the money is a necessity a lot of the time)
Great for saving and building credit, but it takes too long to make deposits. The app says it takes 1-3 business days, but in reality it takes more than a week. Not only does it take forever to see the money in your account, but they also draft it out of your linked account, so you're down x,y,z amount of money and it won't appear on your step account. Definitely not very time efficient. It would be better if it was faster. My other bank takes about thirty minutes to take action.
I like the app, mostly easy to navigate, sometimes it feels like the main page gets a little busy it may just be the placement. Other than that I do like I do like the app. I would have given it more stars if the Black card status was more clear in the beginning. From my understanding I thought if kept interacting with the app I would have the black card status. Now I need to pay 4.99 a month, complete turnoff, might not even really use, as the high $ back is gone. DD can't be used everywhere.
So far, so good. Finally showed on my credit report 2 months after opening, and boosted my score 2-3pts. As someone who's trying to recover my score after destroying it last year down to a 500, I couldn't qualify for any credit card that wasn't secure and most were wanting $2-$300 security deposit. Step didn't require any, and it's format prevents you from hurting your credit score, which is a huge plus if you're someone who's skilled at decimating it. Lol.
Step has been amazing! There is no monthly fees. If you get charged at an ATM, step will give it back to you. I've had no issues. It's so simple transferring money, adding money, paying friends ect.. it's pretty cool you can have your own account along with your teens account and you can watch what they spend, set up weekly allowances. I don't like that it's only a credit card but that's it.
I got this app so I could send money to my highschool-age son. It works as advertised but it's so hard to figure out how to send him money that I spend 5 or 10 minutes re-learning how to do it each time. You'd think it would be immediately obvious how to send money to your one, lone contact, but it's not. You have to cycle through several counterintuitive screens, and deselect a thing or two and select another thing or two, and eventually you can send the money. Oddly difficult.
After loading money in numerous times with a particular debit card, it has stopped working. Every time I try to add the card again, it fails with an ambiguous "something went wrong". There is no obvious way to contact Step, leaving me in a frustrating position with my child whom I cannot send money to. I get trying to minimize support costs, but this is not a game it is meant to handle money... STEP contacted me and explained what was needed. They were prompt, courteous and helpful. 5 stars!
I love this app,it's great for direct deposit. The only thing I'd recommend is adding more permanant reward offers that teens and adults use on a regular basis, like fast food chains and retail chains. I'd also like to see a lock feature added for savings so I can only add but not withdraw from specific savings goals. The round up feature is literal gold, and never get rid of it. I'd like to see step work with modak in the future. I have a modak card, but the card isn't compatible with step yet
Absolutely LOVE Step. I recommend it to all of my friends, to their sheer annoyance. LOL! I have Step Black, mainly just pay for stuff like gas for my vehicle and utilities, and I get more cashback than the monthly bill for the card. ($4.99) I generally gain $10-15 in cashback each month. There is a free version, too, but it does not include cashback. I also love the cards for the kids! Any age can have a Step credit card!
Worst app ever! I've been trying to contact customer support for a week and haven't received any response. For some reason, I haven't been verified and can't get verified. I followed everything step by step with no results. Clicking the customer support link is a waste of time because you don't have the option of typing in what you need help with. I can't even close the account. Trying to close the account has a response of and I quote, "Account Uncloseable". Whatever that means.
loveeeeee this app. I like that you get points on every purchase that you can turn into money/gift cards. I love that it shows your credit score. overall just a short helpful banking app. you can even make money (points) without spending a dime by playing games or doing surveys! it's nothing like THOSE survey and game apps that 'pau' you. if you know, you know.
