The Independent: Breaking News

This app just doesn't work. (Android) Occasionally, I can read a few articles but, if I follow a link, or try a puzzle, that's it for the day. Most of the time I am greeted by a blank page or a spinning loading symbol. It's extremely frustrating! The website is better as I can at least access articles on a browser but at this stage I will not be maintaining a subscription. The journalism is good quality and I'd like to support it, the tech issues really stand in the way.

Works fine but don't click on a podcast episode, as you'll never be able to get the podcast playback options off the bottom of the screen. I had to uninstall the app and redownload. A little ridiculous. Also doesn't seem like the news is actually updated. The Ukraine invasion page was updated 8 hours on the app, but 7 minutes ago on the website, for example.

Pros: 25 free articles a day, good quality journalism Cons: Lots of weird faults: can't scroll through the "five things to know today" at the top of the page, sometimes you can't click on certain articles, search function doesn't always work. You also can't edit your preferences so certain topics do/don't appear, which is a deal-breaker for me. You might as well download BBC news instead

Far better suited to Apple than Android, the phone hangs and crashes on a frequent basis - the iPad doesn't seem to suffer the same fault. Clever link back to full website for older, archived articles. No back button - I have to return to the main page and retrace my steps which is unnecessary and annoying. Clear font and presentation. I can't seem to search for a particular sport on the app? Overall, I find it less than impressive. I'll probably cancel my subscription and buy print

Changed my review from 1 🌟 to 3. I took out my subscription while abroad and have in the meantime found that the problems with the app are cause by any low speed data connection. When linked to a "proper" 3/4G or WiFi network all works fine. But if you travel for work as I do that is not always possible. Halve of the 2/3rd world are on 2G. Dear Independent, you want a 5 🌟 review here?; Then put a proper low speed/data option in like text only. Photos can wait until home/better connection.

Cancelled immediately they took full payment after intro offer and closed the account but they refused to refund payment. I had forgotten it was due and received no reminder. My mistake, should have switched auto renew off, but some flexibility could reasonably be expected. 99GBP down the drain. Money grabbers.

Not so good any more due to the seeming decision to discontinue updating the news content. Before then it was ugly but it worked after a fashion. The problems with getting the comments section to work and the problems with those photo info gallery things were the biggest drawbacks. Looks like I'll have to rely on the Web version until that disappears behind a pay wall...just to add more insult to injury no longer able to log in.

This app is getting worse. I can spend entire lunch breaks trying to get the damned paper to download. It sits there showing me yesterday's edition as proud as anything. The "latest" section can be showing new stuff but not the newspaper. I have full Wi-Fi access (won't download on NHS Wi-Fi) and data on my phone, but it makes no difference. I'm sick of having to reboot the phone, the app, the Wi-Fi. Fix it! Or else I'm due a refund.

Works well most of time then for some reason will not download today's newspaper for a couple of days or more and then starts working again. I have enough available memory etc. I'm using android but annoyingly it's downloaded fine on iOS for someone else in same house.

Another review reports they just get a white screen after entering their account details. I also have this problem, unless I change my default browser from Firefox to Chrome. Once logged-in then I can switch my default browser back to Firefox. I would be much more likely to renew my subscription if I didn't have to semi-regularly fiddle with arcane phone settings just to read a news article. Please also improve the proofing of breaking news stories.

It definitely doesn't deserve the name 'Premium'. It's not even at the level I'd expect from a free news app. I'm astonished that none of the headlines or articles appear to carry a date or time. I've no idea if the 'news' I'm reading is 5 minutes old, 5 days or 5 months. There also don't seem to be any tags linking stories or articles on the same or similar topics. I like the writers and contributors to the Independent but, oh dear, this app does them or the publisher no favours. Horrible.

Long time subscriber. Cannot view anything which is not premium content e.g. any daily newspaper article. Pop-up wants me to subscribe and also says you have an active subscription. Sent screenshot to customer service with request as to solution. No response! So, a waste of 9 quid a month. Same issue on an iPhone.

Terrible app. Cancelled my subscription. Did not recognise my email address even though I was paying the subscription. Asked for help and support and found them to be really unhelpful. Shame, because the news coverage is excellent, if you can get to read it!

This is not premium news it's premium (and overdone) presentation. Don't go to this "upgrade" unless you want: Video content loading automatically without choice. Having to log into the "Premium" account again when accessing some content (even though you'd logged in). Easy isolation of all today's world news Old" content in the "News" category. Having to actually search for the daily crossword. And many others you'd get frustrated with if you're expecting a "newspaper" approach to the news

Impossible to manage or cancel my subscription. Signed up for the trial period but want to cancel before the yearly sub is debited, but it says I don't have an active subscription to cancel. Also can't sign back in after un-installing to remove stuck reading aloud pane. I may have a 24 hour window to cancel the day before it starts. Or I might not, we'll see. Can't find the full articles on the digital editions. Altogether very frustrating app, and not a very good newspaper either.

I gave this a rather unkind review before because I couldn't cancel my subscription. However I discovered this was because the subscription was on an email I don't use often, but it was communicating with me on a different email. It's not a bad app but I do find it hard to find the complete articles sometimes.

Poor.. On Android, I can never log in, just get a white screen with a whirly wheel.. Uninstalled and reinstalled several times, same result. Update - Developers replied that this had been resolved. Let me tell you, it has not. After reinstalling, tried to login, and still get a white screen. Uninstalled. I've had another message to say it's been fixed. Let me tell you again, it has not been fixed, I still get exactly the same issue. Log in, then just a never ending white screen. Uninstalled

Disappointing. Often out of date by a whole day and shows only a fraction of the articles you can see on the website, yet all the articles are accessible if you know what to search for. I have a premium subscription, but this app needs to be better Update 17 July 8:20am. There is no news again today, everything is from yesterday. Uninstalling and cancelling subscription

I couldn't use it. I installed it and was then required to create an account. Fine. I entered my email address and created a password; the screen then went white and nothing happened. I force-closed the app about 2 minutes later and tried again. Same result. Third time: I created the account on the website, restarted the app and chose the 'LOG IN' rather than 'REGISTER' option. Same result. My next action: Uninstalled the app.

A very poor App compared to other UK daily newspapers Took a subscription out.... User unfriendly Difficult to find news as random listed one big muddle, poor if non existent business sectors Codeword puzzle not daily messy interfaces It's cheap the only positive. Website better than App use it to improve news selection and offers easier view. The basics don't work paper needs to scrap this and start afresh ....a stinker....of an App... Shame as paper far better maybe that's the idea !
