The content and news alerts are great, but if you only have the free version, you quickly find out that many of the news alert notifications you receive are for articles that are only available for paying subscribers. Very annoying. I wish there was an option that would only send me alerts for articles I have access to. Also, every time you open the app, you're greeted with an ad for their subscription service, which isn't cheap. Ultimately, I've decided to delete the app for these reasons.
Used to be great, easy to navigate sections, looked good, not overly riddled with ads. I understand a free app needs to be paid for by ads, but Now ads keep popping up in the middle of reading, I cant read certain stories if I don't hand over money. Its unusable if you don't pay. I don't pay for news, you already have ads all through out your articles, I'm ok with that. There are enough free news providers out there that I am about to take me readership elsewhere.
I've used the app for about a week, and took advantage of a great price. So far, very happy, and considering the ad free version also. Although, the ads are not pushy or annoying, they are there though. The user interface is simple, and the app is customizable, displaying the news I'm interested in and the news that I'm not. Very happy, great alternative to other news sources.
Update: 12.30.19. The articles were not updating for several days. Rebooting did not work. Uninstalled and then tried to reinstall. Consistently got error message that it would not load. After numerous tries, I finally just gave up! Older review: I used to use this app a lot. Over the past few weeks, I frequently cannot read articles because the app immediately closes as soon as I click on an article. Reinstalling did not work.
The app is clunky; pictures don't load most of the time and the ads are out of control. This happens across multiple platforms, so it's on their end. Unless you pay fortune you'll continue to get ads. This used to be a good product worth paying for, but unfortunately they've gone down the path of sacrificing quality in order to make more money.
Used to be good but now it doesn't load a single article correctly. I'll get the first line out two then it says this is a developing story and cuts off. Main screens won't load at all and say to check my internet connection. Odd that I had full reception and was on my home network at the time. Also odd that every other app was working just fine. Very tired of getting notifications for articles that are subscribers only! This doesn't entice me to subscribe, it just makes me mad.
No Subscription? Don't GetThisApp I used to use the USA Today mobile site quite a bit a while back and thought the app would be handy. Instead, it wastes my data sending me notifications for articles I cannot read, and begs me to subscribe every minute or two. At $50 a year. It's fine to have subscriber exclusive articles but I don't want to waste my metered data to be notified about them, nor waste my time clicking on it for another "you need to subscribe" notice. Uninstalling.
There are several positive changes to this app over the years, but my number one complaint is that their functionality with pictures is still clunky and limited. Although you can now zoom in to get a better view of the pictures, they are restrained by the original size, and do not take advantage of the full screen (if the original image takes up 1/5 of the screen, zooming in is constrained by this tiny window with wasted space around it taking up most of the screen).
This was a great news app at one point. Now, it's a joke. I tried to watch a video on here. The video was 44 sec, but had 5, count that 5 adds totaling 55 sec. The adds were longer than the video. WTH! I get everyone needs to make $ but 5 adds will make me never use this. Also, when I do not wish to read the story in my pull down menu I swipe to get rid of the notification, but recently it causes my phone to crash. It's only from this app too. No other app has notifications that crash my phone.
I have had an active subscription for ad-free since 2018 and just had a payment go through today but have been seeing ads and getting pop ups in the app to "go ad-free". Can't find any way to contact you for resolution. 7/24 update: USA developer contacted me saying this glitch was fixed & even though I had that version I am still getting ads. Contacted them again & they said it is up to PlayStore to fix???? I now see that several others are having the same issue. Canceled my subscription AGAIN!
Used to be a good app, but now after bombarding the App with Ads trying to get you to Subscribe, not Free anymore unless you want to only read 1-2 stories. They only update the Articles once a day, so when you've read the couple new News Articles in the morning, you don't have to open the App for the next couple days. Gone down hill BIG time, I will be Uninstalling.
It's a shame. This used to be one of the best balanced news apps out there. The ads could get annoying, but it was OK considering it was a reliable and free news source. Unfortunately they've implemented a paid subscription service, which is needed to read certain articles. At first, these subscriber only articles were just peppered in. Now, you need to pay to see half the articles. To make matters worse, they've made the somewhat slimy decision to make the actual news articles "subscriber only"
1 - App still shows teaser on home page that leads to a different story when clicked. 2. Navigation in Sports is IMPOSSIBLE! I choose NFL, but from the next screen, navigation keeps jumping to Basketball (that I hate!) and the Olympics (don't care!). I just spent 5 minutes trying to read an article about Rondale Moore, but the app keeps deciding that's not what I want! I'm done. After being a paper subscriber of USA Today for years, I am uninstalling the app and will NEVER read any article again
Update: still generally happy with the app. but, it's extremely annoying that it constantly asks me to leave a review. my last review was less than a month ago and it has asked me continuously since then In general, I love the app and use it mostly for the simulated newspaper. but many times when trying to load an article for reading the window that opens will be empty with no data. the only option is zooming in on the newspaper to make the print large enough to read
I am still discovering and learning about new features of the app and liking it more and more. For ex. I noticed that if I click on an article in the epaper section, the article opens up in an easy to read format that allows me to do text settings...I like that!
I subscribe to ad free but still get ads everywhere, including Amazon redirects when clicking on an article. Also full access which resets at random to limited access even when signed in. Canceled my subscription, not worth $13/month anymore
The ads have made reading articles impossible as even just the lightest tick used for scrolling will open a new window for the ad. It's ridiculous and makes getting through an article too cumbersome to bother.
2/26: please fix the review request, which pops up constantly. 3/25: Gannett corrected bugs, landed a 5of5 update! worth the wait, this should secure you many satisfied customers Edit: 5 stars for digital content , 1 star for app. Here's what it needs (1) ability to download pdf version of the 5 included local papers or (2) more online content access, (3) not as many repeat pop ups "do you enjoy our app?". update 2026: review begging still pops up all the time. gannett, please fix it
This app gives me the latest news, and I can pick the categories that I like. The only thing I don't like, which is happening on most news apps, is the fee to read certain stories. I understand you have to make money, but it didn't use to be this way.
I kind of like USA today, but I don't think I've opened it in months and still it takes up 3.5 GB!!! What is wrong with you who program that app or decide how much space to stupidly waste?? You can do a better job and you should!!
