Was fine using the free service. Wanted to upgrade for more features, once I paid for it, the app no longer worked. It wanted me to create an account and then would never let me open the app again to do it. So, that sucks. EDIT, uninstalling and reinstalling allowed me access back into the app. But the service I PAID FOR is not accessible. So, that sucks even more.
I like Proton. BUT. Can't rate it more than 3 stars for now, cause of settings. Message: Less UI, more substance please! That goes for Desktop, as well! Make a toggle for different kinds of users: Simple / Advanced. We need more granular settings controls, even for UI. Also, can you add more cities in the USA? IP tracking from greedy corporations is way more precise these days... A ton of servers in major Metro areas, but not enough variety of servers overall. Good job chg your corp. struct. btw
VPN connectivity is generally pretty good and stable. They recently removed the ability to select servers at random which is really annoying. It's useful to be able to reconnect and get a different ip address for sites that try to block that. Also, I don't think their feature that lets you exclude an app from the VPN works correctly because my voicemail app never works right when connected. Response: don't care about load balancing. I want a new ip each time. I retested and it doesn't do that
It's very easy to use. You don't have to even sign nor pay. And it does work and connects you to servers. BUT, you can't choose the server yourself, which really sucks if you need a SPECIFIC region because there's a time you have to wait after selecting a server. it could be much better if you could select the server yourself and maybe even 'favorite' a server so that you can connect to it quicker to use it, especially if you use that specific server the most.
Thank you for your response. Initially I left a 1 ⭐ review simply because I didn't know if the VPN was working on my Galaxy phone. Shortly after I left my original review, I went back to the app to check, and noted that it was indeed blocking trackers and Ads. Something that it was not previously doing, or if it was, it wasn't showing any numbers of blocked ads/trackers. I have a few issues with some sites not loading when the VPN is turned , not sure how to remedy that.
Love the service and I recommend it to anyone who asks about VPN, but the app doesn't always reconnect automatically. Sometimes I find the VPN is disconnected and I need to reconnect manually. Otherwise, works perfect. Didn't realize the developer responded! I reinstalled the app and it seems to work now. I'm not sure what happened, but I couldn't even connect or log in anymore. This seems to have fixed it for now. I am using Bitdefender on all of my devices.
updated the app on 2025.12.21. primarily use it for remote work on a mobile network connection; so figured installing the update was a good idea. however, upon installation, I immediately lost connection; stuck in a "protecting your identity" cycle. switching protocols, disconnecting and reconnecting, restarting the app, and changing servers, does nothing. Report an issue displays a "something went wrong" page after hanging for ages. note: not "1 star" because it is not a paid subscription
Awesome App. Actually does what it says and if it says it's free, it's actually free. Not free plus a small fee. I'm going to upgrade because they offer great services. 100% Recommended! Plus the free services AREN'T janky and so add cluttered to be impossible use. This was a rare find and I'm so glad I found it.
This is one of the best VPN apps I've ever used, I'm currently on the free plan and I can say that the experience is very straightforward. The VPN runs and connects well, it doesn't have any timeout section and although the free plan has fewer countries options to select, it's still pretty good, it's a great recommendation for those who are seeking a free and fast VPN, I mean, it rarely lags and has no annoying ads, definitely worth it downloading, applauses to the developer.
No longer connects properly on my mobile devices since the latest update. I couldn't figure out why my Internet wasn't working until I opened it and found it hanging on "protecting your digital identity" but never actually connecting. It works about 20% of the time now, and breaks after a few hours. iOS and Android are both suffering from this.
Overall, it was a great experience whether I used the free or paid version. The only reason I previously put 4 stars is on the free version there are so many vpns with extremely slow signals. For example 96% server load or higher which makes the use of it very impractical. I understand that it is free so you don't get to choose your server. So it may be unreasonable ask for better.
I've had this app for about a year and it was great in the beginning. There were occasional loading issues/server drops but nothing major. Now, I can't connect to any servers unless I'm connected to my home wifi. Even then, once I open an app nothing will load and the VPN disconnects. It doesn't matter if I'm connected to a US server or not.
I've been greatly satisfied with this app previously, though in the past day I seem to be having an issue with the free version. Not only is it unable to connect to any of the free servers on the app, but even sending an error report had something go wrong, as the report was unable to be sent. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon.
It was fine at first but it's very clear you only want people using the paid version. I waited 3 times to change the server just to be connected to the same one I switched from in the first place. All four servers (3 as one of them was a repeat) were in the country I live in which defeats the purpose of why I downloaded this. I wanted to view media banned in my country for educational purposes. Thank you for wasting your time reading this (bc you won't make free better. just the paid version)
Despite being one of, if not, the best free VPN, one of many things that annoys me is how despite putting Always-On VPN, it still disconnects. "Always-On" not "Turn-Off-Randomly". Another thing that annoys me is how there are some features that shouldn't be behind a paywall. Like Split Tunneling and getting 10 Gbps. Basic features do not need to be accessed for 8 bucks monthly. Well, besides that, I do wish there were more free servers. I don't know I might just be picky there.
I'm not sure what's happened, but in the last couple weeks I've lost all the different cities in different countries. I get one choice. And, coming with that I now get some search results in the language of the countries VPN in using. I've also started having to give or deny cookie consent on every website I go to and even some apps. I've never had any of these issues until about 2 weeks ago.
Great service at a fair price. What's really great about this app is that it offers multi hop capabilities through their secure core based in multiple privacy friendly countries. For some reason, that's a rare, but critical feature for privacy. No other major provider offers that, not even Nord. Breaking through 1 VPN, possible and not hard for some. Breaking through 3 of them? Good luck. Better pack a lunch and be ready for a lot of delivery. Up to 10 devices, run a VM and run the VPN in VM.
I acctually love this app. Use it all the time and the speeds are almost as good as my normal WiFi. The fact it's so easy to connect and disconnect with no ads in between is unrivalled. The only downside is that you can't choose what country which is a bit annoying when watching netflix or something so that's y it's a 4
Bro, I was pissed cause I couldn't watch the second season of jjk on Netflix and there was no free option to watch it anywhere else, so I tried this as a last ditch, just using the free plan, and it just works. Honestly this is so perfect and convenient and FREE so I am happy and I feel that everyone should know about this!
I purchased a promo rate of $0.99 for 1st month. I used it; seemed good. Two days later I received an email from Google that my purchase has been cancelled, even though I hadn't cancel it. I contacted Proton to find out what happened. No response. I contacted Google and they responded, "The transaction cancellation was triggered due to the price change." What the hell? Proton cancelled the transaction after I paid and used it? I wouldn't recommend paying for a year.
