Wire - Secure Messenger

This is the best secure messaging app I could find, but not because it's so great, but because competitors suck even more. They either insist on using your phone number as identifier (Signal et al) or drain your battery (Antox). Problems with this app include extremely inconvenient key verification process and inconsistent notification time. I have not seen hour-long notification delays like other users, but a few minutes is not uncommon.

I've used this app since 2015. At first it was a great, but they keep releasing updates that break the app. Messages will randomly be wiped from chats (the trash icon doesn't even show), images more than a couple days old won't load, you have to completely close and restart the app a few times in order to read a message, and sending a message is no longer reliable. A simple text message takes quite a while after clicking resend a few times. Wish they would have just left it alone.

The core messaging functionality is far too unreliable. I often receive messages hours after they were sent and out of order. The app also frequently fails to send some messages. In the unlikely event that I receive messages, notifications often don't work. For a messaging app, those are the bare minimum that the app needs to do. I love the security aspect of wire, but it fails to do the basics. I'll be switching back to Signal or trying Telegram.

I've been using this app for a couple years to communicate with family while deployed. When functioning properly, the app is great. It has not functioned properly in at least a month. If I leave the app at all, it crashes. Even during voice calls, I can't leave the Wire screen to do anything else. Notifications are spotty. I'm about ready to switch to a different secure messenger.

This app worked perfectly fine a few months ago, but since more recent updates it constantly freezes, will not sync with desktop at all after I tried to reinstall the app (desktop version works great), crashes often, and occasionally won't even open. I wouldn't be as frustrated by this if it hadn't been working fine for almost a year prior to these recent updates.

Update: worsening each day. Constantly crashes and freezes. It used to be great but now I dread using it. Barely opens and I have to uninstall/reinstall daily which makes me lose all my backups. If I didn't have to then I wouldn't use the product. Staff takes a long time to reach out and help. Only two personal accounts on Android compared to three on Apple. Update: I've had to uninstall and reinstall FOUR TIMES in the last week and even more overall. No history is saved.

New version sucks. Used this app for about a year, liked it quite bit. The interface was unique and refreshing, functionally simple and easy to use. Was just about to invite more friends to join, but the latest update suddenly changed the look and wiped out all past conversations with individual accounts (not groups). A serious app can't do that. Very bad. And the new interface looks so lame. I recommend you bring back the last version.

I think overall the app is good & I am glad to be introduced to it. However, there are a few issues. Sometimes it says sent but it's not delivered. It does NOT allow my read receipts to work EVER. I know they are read because they are responded to, but I can't see they are read. The picture was a very clear picture and yet when saved your app made it grainy. When I edit a comment it doesn't post right away and so the whole message isn't delivered yet.

Update: Are you kidding me? I'm logged out if I run updates via the Play Store? This time I checked immediately because there was a period when I wasn't getting any messages on my phone while the desktop app was getting them,.and it was because I was logged out. I have lost contact with some folks because they don't get my notifications. It's become worse, so whomever is left here with me is basically staying until we all move to another platform.

Most recent update is pretty university bad. It used to give a preview for photos to send with one button. Now it's two buttons to get to the main file system and still no preview to decide which photo to send. There used to be an option for dark theme. That option is gone. You used to be able to select your own ringtone. No more. So if you're a developer, we want the old app back.

After the latest update I wasn't able to text any longer from my phone. The text field was gone. I had to reinstall the app. I tried to sync the app from Settings - Advance and there is no visual aid which tells me that the app is performing the synchronization. I would expect to see something instead. Moreover I could click the sync button many more times without getting a warning. Is the synchronization happening at all? Please fix this app.

Ok to start, but then went downhill. I chose this app because it wasn't associated with Facebook, Microsoft, etc., and in the beginning, it worked pretty well. Now, after about one year, the app bogs down so badly it isn't useful anymore. Messages are delayed for minutes and sometimes hours which is not useful to any messaging app. So now I am left again searching for another app which isn't associated with some big name company and full of spyware.

Total garbage if you have an Android. Nothing they have done to "improve" the app has changed its performance on my phone, as I almost never get the messages (though thankfully they at least come through on my desktop, so I see them eventually, but that issue defeats the purpose of a messaging app!). And even when I get the messages to my phone, I rarely get push notifications. Skip right over this if you have any intention of communicating with droid users and get Telegram instead.

Very clean, no ads. Got all the major functions, video call, audio call, and text chat. The best part is that it doesn't require you to give up your phone number, contacts (you can deny the permission request), etc. This is the #1 reason I choose this app. The PC version is not as function rich as the phone version, I miss the emojis on PC. The footprint in memory in PC is also very small. I like that. The map location function doesn't seem to work. Although I don't think I will really use that much, but why put it there if not working? But I would rather not use the FB Messenger, despite FB Messenger has more functions. FB is not to be trusted.

Has some of the most features of a messaging app that I've tried out, but no matter what i do (uninstall/reinstall, reset push notifications) i can't get it to send notifications when i receive a message. I have to manually check the app every so often just to see if someone sent me a message. Even then it takes time to refresh and show messages. +2 stars for the abundant features. -3 for missing one of the features that matters most.

Since the update I'm having the horrible freezing issue like many other users. The app is pretty much unusable. I am using a galaxy S7 device. Joined beta program and nothing changed.. so I left. It freezes every time I send a message for a few seconds it is very irritating. Started 2 updates ago. Also noticed if I open the app while Bluetooth is connected it kills my Bluetooth connection... Please fix!!! This sucks!! I wish I could give zero stars.

Great idea, mediocre execution. This app's cardinal sin is that it often doesn't notify that there is a new message. Furthermore, messages often do not go through without closing/reopening the app. And if a message doesn't go through there is no alert so you can re-send it. Lots of comical communication errors have occurred in my life resulting from this app's dysfunction. I love the idea and want it to work, but it's become very frustrating to use.

The new update is horrendous. Can no longer send voice memos, have to download photos and videos to view, can't see when the other user is typing, notifications are even MORE unreliable... oh, and you can no longer search your chats or view previously shared media. Did they even run a beta version? They completely changed every facet of their app and this new version is awful.

I'm deleting this app because it don't work. I contacted support and they suggested leaving the app open for an extended period of time to see if that would correct the issue. It still don't work. Decrypting messages and waiting for network. It's been like this for at least 6-8 weeks. I'm going back to KIK and that app sucks now too. I guess I should take this as a sign to quit hiding messages. Edit.....I've tried rebooting the phone, force stop on app, check for updates, leaving app open. 👎👎

Best messenger I've used. (Update) latest update broke the notification. I can't change the sound from the default, which is the quietest sound they could find. Also, it's crashing fairly often now. Would've been better to leave it alone. another update: doesn't notify. tried the beta. tried cache and date. I'm trying a fresh install and moving on if that doesn't work. Devs have known it is broken and apparently will not just roll back to what worked. best of luck, but I'm about to move on.
