Description

511PA is a mobile application provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) that offers real-time, hands-free traffic advisories for all PennDOT roadways in Pennsylvania, as well as major roadways in neighboring states. The app uses your phone's GPS and data from the PA, NJ, and WV travel information system to alert you when you are approaching congestion, accidents, or other traffic disruptions. The advisories are broadcasted audibly, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. The app allows you to customize the range and frequency of the advisories, as well as filter out certain types of advisories or limit them to the direction you are traveling. It also provides audio player controls for play, pause, stop, skip, and replay, although these should not be used while driving. If you receive a phone call while an alert is playing, the alert will pause and resume once the call ends. The app operates anonymously and does not collect any identifying information about you or your phone, although it does collect device-determined speed and location data by default. However, you can opt out of this data collection if you prefer. It is important to note that the app should only be launched when you are not operating your vehicle, as using interactive wireless communication devices while driving is prohibited by the Commonwealth Motor Vehicle Code. Users are expected to use the app responsibly and avoid any interaction with mobile devices while driving.

The user interface is horrible. It wasn't showing any saved routes and then suddenly I had multiple copies, which it wouldn't allow me to delete. I had to clear app storage to get rid of them. It seems like it's not communicating properly with whatever database the website is using. And, after all that, there doesn't seem to be any way to view a saved route on the map. I'm giving it 2 stars since it is slightly useful, but I'm not sure if I'll keep it.

I don't find it user friendly. When you zoom with 2 fingers it spins around. If you hit back it takes you out of the app and when you return, it's zooms out so far it's a world map. It seems to want to be a GPS, but I have enough of those. I want to see road conditions. There is a storm, and the app can't handle the traffic.

It used to work before they updated and totally revamped the app. Sad when you can't even get the necessary confirmation email from them to keep using the app since it recognizes my phone number. The whole app is so convoluted. I just want to see if traffic is flowing normally on I81 between Scanton and Wilkes-Barre. But there's no easy way to access the cameras anymore. So far I can't even login for lack of a "confirmation " email from them. Poor, poor app
