Google had some great ideas but another two years have passed and the unreliability remains . I have one word to describe the accuracy and reliability of "Presence Sensing" - "Flaky"! My settings are unchanged. Yes they are all set correctly. I double check them with every malfunction. Fast forward 2 more years and the problems are actually worse. I simply do not understand why Google will not fix this this. I think it's time to switch to a different brand smart thermostat!
Presence sensing for home/away assist gets worse and worse. It used to turn the camera on, set the thermostat to eco, and undo that when one of us came home. Now we're lucky if it ever does it at all. The camera comes on when we leave most of the time, but it only turns off half of the time. Eco mode has to be done "manually." update 2+ years later: same. Eco mode changes itself more often now, but the camera does less, so it is about the same.
I only use this for the thermostat. It works more or less and I like the reporting, but the scheduling UI is terrible on mobile. i think it was designed for a browser. Its way too small and sensitive for the average mobile user. Initially 3 stars, but it has been this way for YEARS, so dropping to 2. Not interested in any other nest products if they can't get the simple ones right.
Learning mode does NOT work well! I have it set to 68 for heat, and it turns itself on and heats to 70. I'll turn it off at night because I don't like to be hot and I don't trust it to keep the right temp - and I'll STILL wake up to it running and heating my place to 70/71. I turned off learning mode since the previous owner said it caused nothing but problems, and it's STILL causing problems. I do love that I can adjust the temp from my phone, but I feel l have to fuss with it too much.
Nest works well with Google Home, but two things could improve. 1, give more notice BEFORE the monthly smoke alarm sound check, not after it happens. 2, give more time to tell the app that smoke is from cooking before sounding the alarm - 5 seconds isn't enough time to get the phone out of my pocket, open the app, and figure out how to say it's safe.
Owned for years and not a single improvement has ever been made. Same glitchy app it's been since day one. This company doesn't care. Bad UI, frequently disconnects from the internet, ridiculously poorly designed scheduling. "Learning thermostat" can't even follow a schedule properly. And now for LITERALLY no reason at all it keeps putting itself into eco mode and not heating my home unless I manually put it back to heating. If it wasn't so expensive I would've thrown it out years ago.
Been using this for more than 2 years now. Good to have a camera to view outside, but frustrated when the camera alerts came several seconds after whatever/whoever outside passed by. Even when I walked up to the door, the alert came when I already about to enter the house! that at least 4 seconds!! As for records, it often only keeps photos of people walked past, meaning more often than not the photos were of scenery! Only if the person stopped, such as delivery man, then it shown.
App is fine but features need improvement. The auto schedule becomes "aggressive". I delete automatic adjustments for them to appear again within days. The automatic schedule has 3 adjustments to the same temperature throughout the day. I only turn the system down, it's winter time, at bed time but it lowers it in the morning and then in the evening. When I turn the system up, it'll readjust it within an hour.
Limited and annoying. No need for Google; buy a different smart home device like the Ecobee. With Nest, you can't see the same day heating data and have to wait until the next day. All data given is still limited. There's no way to see the history of the temperature / humidity recordings. The remote temperature devices are badly designed (form over function). As a result, they lag on measuring accurate temperature changes when the room temperature is being adjusted, so itovershoots by a lot.
Editing my review after about 5 years of use. The app works okay. For one reason or another, it can lose WiFi connection. However, it will work on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi frequencies, unlike some others where it will only work on 2.4Ghz. Did have an issue where I had to manually recharge the thermostat, because it just quit charging on its own, even though it was still hard wired in. The app is useful, when it works, which is about 98% of the time.
it's fine as a tool for setting temperature, but it could be much better. the interface for creating a schedule requires landscape mode where you can only view a single day at a time, setting a schedule for the week requires you to copy paste into each day. additionally, there's not much in the way of historical data. it tells you how many hours the furnace ran for each day in the last two weeks. id like to see a house temperature graph.
The app won't stop trying to get me to give control of the thermostat to my electric company. I have to reject the rewards so I can have AC when I need it! Now it's adding a second never-ending pop up trying to force me to turn on notifications! I'll probably toss the thermostat in the trash. The endless pop ups so they can control everything is never ending.
It won't shut up about turning on notifications every time I open the app. The hell I need notifications for? My body already notifies me when I'm hot or when I'm cold. I don't need an app for that. Just set my temperature and shut up. Wanted to give it 1 star for being annoying, but it is nice to turn on the heat and not get out of bed, so I gave it two stars.
The schedule interface is very awkward to use. Also, app does a poor job tracking when I'm home (or not). No useful app changes in the past 5 years. The app needs serious updates and fixes. Make the schedule easier to use. Allow me to see a graph of my house temperature throughout the day. You send me a usage email that is a waste of time without data to back it up. Also, give us profiles for each season. I don't know anyone who sets their house to one setting year around.
My experience was so poor, I went back to a thermostat from the late 80s and look at that, MY ENERGY BILL DECREASED. You read that right! I don't have to wrestle with a thermostat anymore, and guess what? When I set it to 68, it stays! *original review* app constantly asks for notification permission, to subscribe to nest service and forces my thermostat to a different temperature even though I've opted out of these features. "adjusting target temperature by one degree" I regret purchasing nest.
doesn't let you do tons of stuff that you have to do from the thermostat manually even when connected to internet. and not even a way to get alerts when the thermostat loses power (which is a frequent issue). you should be able to view every bit of info and every setting, or what's the point? i am forcing myself not to let my view of the nest thermostat itself color my rating or it would be 1 star. worst purchase ever, and tons of bad money chasing bad money after the initial mistake.
I now think it's really bad, I would not purchase this again after having it 5 years. it's been reinstalled 3 new phones. app still sucks. I won't even let it control the humidifier because it'so inaccurate. I would rather walk to the basement to adjust it than fight the nest. fyi it's gotten worse. it doesn't turn show the correct temperature until you connect with the app then it changes what it says the temperature is to the real temperature and then turns on the heater.
The app is good, but when you have a power surge/ outage or opt to use the leaf, Nest will wipe out all your info and you have to go in and put all your information back in. It is a smart thermostat, I like the fact that it knows when you're gone/ home most of the time. I own two the price is still a bit steep, but it will decrease your electric bill depending on the model. I don't like the fact that amazon sold it to goggle that's when the problems started that's why I the 4 stars.
Behaves very poorly when it has Wifi issues. Does not report that it can't talk to the thermostat, but simply fails to operate the thermostat. In UI you may be doing temperature adjustments but nothing happens. Also - annoyingly keeps pushing every 6 months it's "seasonal energy savings" feature. Which means it will take over the control of the thermostat and and decides when to heat/cool and by how much.
It would be better on the schedule if I could type in the temperature instead of using sliders. I don't want renew, I need my house a reasonable temperature. keep getting asked and select reject savings, the next day my thermostat has changed and my house is freezing in the winter. renew decided to change the temperature before I was given the option to opt out. I don't want to have keep telling the app every few months that I don't want renew.
